We adopted a cocker spaniel on Wednesday. From Wednesday until early Saturday everything was fine. Late Saturday night, she went in her crate and has not come out-- not even for a walk. She growls everytime we speak to her or walk by her crate. I woke up this morning to find that she pooped all over the living room. I don't know if this is relevant but we did change her food Saturday because she would not eat the other food her former owner gave us. What is wrong with my dog?

you can't make sudden food changes; you mix new with the old and slowing decrease the old until you have just the new food; she is using her crate as a den, giving her comfort and security; I don't know how old she is by growling is her fear; stay away from my den ; you can entice her out by placing a treat outside the crate area and praise her; give her some toys to play with outside the crate; don't give into the growling; work slowly with her but work with her so you don't have big behavior problems; the food and water is outside the crate; place it further away ; new environment etc ; can take some time but you need to address these issues; the pooping all over the place is her telling you ; this is what I think about you and my new place and now I am marking my territory with my scent; trust and love takes time; don't expect it overnight but with patience, understanding and consistent training with you as the leader, it will come; take control and train her. Don't hit, yell, shake etc. that only creates more fear; know where she is coming from and show her that you know what you are doing so she doesn't have to be so fearful of her new place.

Changing food abruptly can upset the tummy. It must be changed slowly. Go back to the old food for now. It is not unusual for a dog to not eat for a few days when they are placed in a new home.
As for your living room, the crate door should be shut when you aren't there to watch her. Put the crate in your bedroom so she can see you at night. Sounds like she is really afraid and will need time to adjust.

one age is a factor. then you can have depression in animals. puppies going to a new family is not a problem, when you deal with older animals...it's a whole new ballgame. spend more quality time completely on the new dog. and i have heard stories of 'rage' with cocker spaniels, and these stories were from people that had these dogs from puppies. so...its all about the factors involved, good luck.

Could be she's depressed, moving into a new home with a new family, give her time she should come around.
If she continues this behavior, you may want to contact the former owners and consider returning her.
Good Luck.

***YOU*** are "what's wrong"!!!

WHY did you leave it un-crated so it COULD foul the house?

WHY did you change it's feed, when thats what it's USED TO?

WHY are you ALLOWING it to hide & DARE to THREATEN you??

Take it back,eh? This is obviously *NOT* a good match.
