Ask the previous owner how long ago it treated the puppy. It can take a while for the meds to completly get rid of the worms so it could still be passing them but still be fine. If it is tapeworms which it probablly is if it looks like little rice pieces, then it has to pass all the segments out of it's system. However you do need to still take it to the vet to get it updated on its puppy vaccines and they will also give a dewormer. Although it is expensive please make sure your puppy is healthy and doesn't carry any deseases.

Find out when the prior owner treated the puppy. The wormy poo may be due to the treatment. If it was recently then that was probably it. Your pup should be okay.

Your best option is to have your puppy wormed again when you take him to the vet to be spayed or neutered. Ask the vet to do it then. He should be fine. Do NOT buy any of the non-prescription wormers at Petco/Petsmart or any other store. Those wormers might say they are for dogs, but they were originally manufactured for livestock and then watered down. They are no formulated for a dog, and definitely not for a puppy. Ask the vet....it won't cost much at all.

And, as an edit...if you cannot afford a vet you should not have a dog. That is irresponsible. Find a home for the dog with someone who can afford to keep him healthy.

Good luck!

If you can't afford a vet, you can't afford a pet. Puppies and kittens need vaccinations at regular intervals when they are young so they don't get horrible diseases like Parvo. If your pup doesn't get it's shots, and it gets parvo, it will die a horrible death of bloody diarrhea and basically sluff it's intestinal lining and dehydrate to death. Not a pretty picture, eh? If you can't afford to take it to a vet while it's healthy, you certainly can't afford to treat any injuries or illnesses it may have and that is TOTALLY irresponsible.
As an aside... what the heck kind of breeder would sell/give a pup to someone who can't afford proper care of that dog. That is totally irresponsible too.
Give the pup back or give it to the humane society so it can find someone who can afford to take care of it properly. Sheesh!
And to answer your question, the ONLY way you can tell if it still has worms is to have the VET look at a poop sample under the microscope and see if microscopic eggs are present.

not to be rude, but why did u get an animal if u can't afford to take it to the vet? my sister has an old dog that has arthritis, allergies, and a limp when she walks. her dog has to take medication for these problems and she always took her took the vet regularly. by her taking her dog to the vet for checkups, shots and such they caught these problems before it was too late to make a difference. her dog is like 11 or 12 and the vet said that for her age even with her arthritis and such that she is in great shape and very healthy. the vet praised my sister for the care she's given her dog. the vet said she usually see dogs that eventually have to be put down cause people have waited too long to take their dogs to the vet. you can call around an compare prices of vets. some vets may have payment plans. if u wait too long it may cost u more then if your dog was seen right away. good luck!

You should not have a dog if you cant afford a vet. Deworn your dog monthly, and it sounds like your dog got rid of the worms, but I'm not sure. If you cant afford the dog, I'd get rid of it.

Take your dog to your veterinarian, they can prescribe something to get rid of the worms. Also only give your dog dog food that can be suggested by the vet. Don't give your dog sweets this is the worst culprit of worms.
