The term ***** refers to "a female dog." While the DAM is "a female parent espically of a domestic animal." By the way, the male dog is called a SIRE - "the male parent of an animal and espically of a domestic animal."

A dam is the mother of the puppies and a ***** is a female dog in general. Males are referred to as dogs and the father of the puppies is the sir.
