I cannot imagine that this would work. The DVD player not being HD is a kind of a missing link.

You can't watch hd dvd without a hd dvd player, but you can buy what is called an upscaling dvd player, they retail for just a little more than a normal dvd player.
These allow you to insert a norma standard definiton dvd, and they will display the output picture in high definition. The picture quality will be comparable to the picture of hd dvd, so this is a good way to go if you want to wait for the blu ray dvd players to drop in price.

No. HD DVD's require the use of a blue laser to read the information on the disk while standard DVD players use red lasers. There is no way to get the information off the disk without an HD DVD player.

No you need a HD or a Blu-ray player
