I think that Christmas has been sold to us by retailers for so long now that is nothing more in reality than a moneymaking scheme. Most retailers would go out of business if it wasn't for the huge boost in sales experienced during November and December. I think it is sad how advertising has programmed our children to expect bigger, better, fancier and of course, much more expensive toys on Christmas morning. When did Christmas become about giving and getting gifts, anyways? Why can't we just have a holiday that is about spending quality time with your family and friends WITHOUT spending hoards of money?

Last year I was so disenchanted I didn't celebrate Christmas at all. I am still undecided about what to do this year.

Christmas, to me anyways, is about the children. It is a wonderful, magical time in their lives that they will never get back. I don't believe you are starting too soon, if you are just decorating, and preparing Christmas cookies together, things of that nature. Make sure that they understand though, that it is not all about the gifts that they receive, that it is also about giving, which to me, is even more important than receiving. Make sure that they understand the real reasons that we are celebrating Christmas. I think you understand what I mean here, but I don't want to offend anyone.

Hope this helps you some! You are blessed to have your children! Enjoy their young years while you can, as they will be gone before you know it! Take care and Happy Holidays! :)

If interested in the truth, yes it is over rated, but also a system that turns. And in every family we will hear, see and feel this day coming. "Chistmans". How you begin that day and what is grows into might be an approach you would consider. Gift$, Jesus?, Decorations!, Gift$, Jesus?, Decorations!, Gift$, Jesus?, Decorations!, Gift$, Jesus?, Decorations!, these are the three that reign on this day. Money we never have enough. Jesus which includes many beliefs, and decorations which combine the two money for all the blinging ornaments and money for all the sybolic (religous) stuff. Be frugal in you spendings and you won't spent alot, be honest in your belief to stay true to yourself when giving expect to receive and not to receive in return. When the years have gone by you will see personally how you have grown on that day "Christmas"

No, Xmas is not overrated; I love it! Ignore your mother and start celebrating when you want.

BTW, just to reply to Michelle's post:

"It is not over rated...but alot of people have it wrong about getting and giving alot of presents. ....its jesus birthday"

No, it's not. Christmas is a pagan festival that was hijacked by the Christians (just like they've done with all the other pagan celebrations), who've been trying to pass it off as their own ever since.

The SPENDING is sooooooo overrated !! People thinking they have to spend a certain amount to please someone else is completely ridiculous !!

I maybe spend $15 dollars on people that is it! IF they have problem with it then they do not have to worry about getting another gift next year for I will be done with them!

Most people children couldn't even tell you WHY CHRISTmas is even a holiday! They think Santa and gifts is the only reason. HOW SAD !

Christmas has lost its true meaning for me. I just pray every day, not just on christmas, I have seen alot of people go into debt because of christmas, I have seen marriages severed because of christmas, people getting evicted and the day after new years, big arguments and abuse rears its ugly head again so I am no longer celebrating the gift giving and I dont want any company on christmas so forget it.

Ignore her! You should start celebrating when you want! We put our christmas tree up yesterday :-) all the presents are underneath and everything. I love christmas as I get to see all of my family which I dont get to do very often and this is enough to make me start celebrating in about october! :-)
Have a Merry christmas!

well it gets more expensive every year...presents in this day and age cost ALOT....not like years ago where you got the kids simple and lasting presents...now it's PCs Ipods...electronics, just one costs over £100, then they want something else to go with it, the designer label clothes etc etc, it goes on and on...maybe i am just being old fashioned but yep...Christmas is becoming a huge strain on the purse strings for many families....OK i will say it...Bahhhh (HUMBUG) lol....
