vivisection is live exploratory surgery / dissection. whether the subject is anesthetized or 'awake' is probably determined by the purpose of the operation. in some biology classes students may be required to 'pith' and vivisect a live frog. this involves inserting a probe [aka needle] into the brain of said frog and damaging it only enough to inhibit conscious functions without terminating heartbeat, respiration and autonomic nervous responses - in theory affording a 'painless' vivisection; in reality a living death. horrid stuff.
