many people need to justify there non belief, because they usually have had parents who were religious and there still arguing with them in a sense. Its because they don't have the Spirit of God in them. and know they need direction in there life's.but don't have it. and are arrogant and are on the defense while trying to justify there non belief they know deep down there lost and need direction in there life's but there mind wont's to control there behavior. Its the Prince of the power of the airs influence that works thru people to confuse them. by making them rely on there brain not there heart.when love comes into the picture , then the Spirit of God will dwell within them.Pray for them. don't judge them.Just be in the Spirit. allow them to make there mistakes, as we all have a life to live learning and growing. and hopefully one day they will find God and allow the spirit into them . May God Bless You. Peace

Many people who I respond to have improperly given religious explanations for something science has proven to be natural phenomenon. It would be like someone telling you that your car engine is powered by angels who use angel juice and that the gas pump is a gateway to heaven. You would think that is ridiculous if you knew just the basics of a 4 stroke engine. Would you try to straighten that individual out?

I happen to have quite a bit of experience with the calculation of probability, physical laws and genetics, and these happen to be the categories that the incorrect religious explanations fall into. Consider the effectiveness of prayer, if 10 people are given a 1 in 10 chance of survival for some horrendous disease and 8 of them pray, the chances are pretty good that the 1 who survived will have prayed. Does this mean that prayer worked? No, it means that a good percentage of the population that was sick had also prayed. So the chance that the 1 person who survived had also prayed was very good. The only way this could have demonstrated that God answers prayers are if the odds were significantly beaten, I would say 4 or greater of the diseased that prayed also survived. Entropy is likewise misunderstood. While entropy relates to the dispersal of energy in a closed system, in an open system entropy tends to drive the formation of complexity. For 30 years scientists have been modeling naturally occurring phenomenon that form this complexity with no intelligent hand. Complexity does not require any kinds of intelligence. Related to this, genetics is the biggest and most misunderstood bone of contention in the evolution vs. creationism debate. Many creationists, and quite a few evolutionists here, don’t seem to understand the link between genes and the evolutionary process. After Watson and Crick discovered DNA, Darwin became old hat because genes were shown to be the drivers of evolution. Dawkins explained that evolution is directed and specific because it is a process involving the replication of genetic information. This had several implications for our understanding of biology from taxonomy to human psychology. Despite this, most arguments people make regarding creationism are the same one’s made back in the 1800’s – arguments proven false time and again.

This misunderstanding seems to happen because science and math are difficult subjects, and statistics indicate they are not taught well in the US. I would say that most of the people touting religious explanations don’t have a firm grasps in these areas. Many of them don’t have a grasp on basic logical such as why one can’t prove a negative. This is detrimental to their own judgment and the society in general. It’s the very reason why societies moved away from dictatorial, religious rule, and the divine right of kings to a Parliamentary and Congressional systems that require reason and debate. It is the reason that science is good ad finding cures for disease, provides medical solutions to recurrent human problems, and develops technical solutions to the challenges of human living, while religion can do none of these things. Some of the basic scientific beliefs that most people in the world hold today would have been considered heresy to the faithful just a few hundred years ago, but science and reason persisted. One could say debating religion is an attempt to stop a move back to a time when we thought disease was caused by demons and the Earth was the center of the Universe. The religious extremists in countries like the Afghanistan have clearly shown that such a fall back is possible.

Jay, where does all this debating take place ? How many times have you had an Atheist knock on your door, stuff a lot of printed junk in your hand, and try to convince you of their non-belief ? I believe you have things twisted around a bit. It's the religious nuts who are always trying to push their superstitious ideas onto others.

Atheists tend to be well educated people who have been trained to be thinkers and not followers. That being said, atheists tend to debate anything and everything because they are thinkers. Religion is just one of the many topics they like to talk about. There is evidence in their favor and the other side of the debate is purely faith based.

The fact is,atheism is very much like a religion. Their "gods" are science and fact, and if anybody disagrees with them, they defend it as religiously as Christians defend the existence of God. Atheists are just as close-minded as they say Christians are.
Atheists don't believe in God because they say they have never seen any proof of God. Christians believe in God because they HAVE seen proof of God. Atheists dismiss the proof Christians have because they themselves have never seen or experienced the same experiences Christians have.Since there are millions of Christian accounts showing evidence and proof of God, I don't see how atheists can totally ban the possibility of God from their minds, simply based on them not having seen it. There are many events from history that we believe because they were eyewitnessed and written in our history books. Just because we haven't seen them firsthand doesn't mean they never happened. The same goes for the Christian's experiences with God. Just because an atheist doesn't see it,doesn't mean it never happened. There are millions of eyewitnesses around the world who can testify to the existence of God from firsthand experience. To debate something atheists have absolutely no experience of is illogical and foolhardy, because they are arguing something they know nothing about, because they haven't had firsthand experience of it.

Why do Christians spend so much time debating religion? Aren't all your answers in the Bible?

Truthfully, I am on an evangelical mission, promoting science and reason, and dispelling the dangerous myths of religion.

If the majority of the world thinks that Harry Potter exists, we would spend just as much time debunking their claim.

because everyone who finds out they're atheist tries to convert them. I'm not atheist, and I do not mind discussing religion. I do not judge anybody by what their beliefs are. but if you try to push them on me,then you will already have lost my respect.

We wouldn't be debating it if all you christians agreed with us.

The better question is why do christians debate religion, considering there is no proof of the stories in the bible.
