so i got it pierced just over a week ago and everything was fine until a few days ago, it started swelling and burning up. the next day it was pretty obvious it was infected, bright red, painful, really swollen. ive been taking ibroprufen and doing sea salt soaks and using anti-septic spray. the infection is affecting my lymph glands.. so my throat is swollen and the side of my face, like a 50p size, has become hard and swollen,. oh and its affecting my hearing through the pierced ear. yesterday i went to the doctors and he gave me anti-biotics but said if theres no improvement within 48 hours to take it out. now i know its generally said not to take it out because it will trap the infection, but dont u think doctors know what they're talking about? i dont know. anyway, the infection has been really draining me, ive been quite ill and tired alot.
do you think it will clear up? ive taken a days worth of anti-biotics and it doesnt seem to have made a difference..
what should i do?

it usually takes till the second or even third day after starting the antibiotics before you notice a difference,,,,,,i personally would remove the ring, so the infection could drain out,,,, it could even be a reaction to the material the ring is made of

I've yet to read your post, but I've read the first two answers.
DON'T TAKE IT OUT.
Think about it - if you get something such as anti-biotics (if you can take them, as I can't.. since I'm allergic to all of them).. to make it better.. how it taking the piercing out and letting it close going to help when you're trying to get the infection in contact with the anti-biotic.
Go to the piercer, tell him this, and see what he says.

I would normally be mean and tell you it will all be okay in a few days after the gangrene sets in and then the side of your face rots off.
But instead, I suggest you do what your doctor ordered. Chances are the place you got the piercing won't touch it any more because it's infected.

DON'T TAKE IT OUT!! You're right that it can trap the infection inside. It's much easier to heal open, than to have to go have it lanced so that the infection can drain later.
You should go back to your piercer immediately. Continue taking the antibiotics (one day isn't enough time for them to work.. take the whole prescription).

You need to remember that you can always get it peirced again. Go to the piercing shop and have them take it out. Maybe they'll offer to pierce it again once the infection is gone. I know that you like it, I actually want to peirce mine too, but the health of your body comes before looks!!!

a days worth of antibiotics will have no affect..
you need to full course treatment..7 to 10 days worth or a strong Z-pack...
you also might want to take it out, honestly..
there is really nothing else to do except keep up on those antibiotics and keep it as clean as you can..if you remove it, liberally apply a good triple antibiotic at least 3 times a day...

I would take it out. But if you don't agree with your doctor go back to the place you got it pierced they might have had experience with the same sort of problem

I had heaps of problems with mine, it took 2 rounds of antibiotics to clear up, but its beautiful now. I say persist, go back to the doctor once you've finished your course of antibiotics.
And yes, doctor generally know what they are talking about.

the prob in the tragus is poor circulation to the cartilage. if you leave it in you could end up with deformities there, not to mention systemic sepsis. the only additional thing i can think of is topical moist heat many times a day.

take it out. if the infection spreads it will be into your face. try putting anbesol on it. it will numb it and it is also an antiseptic. also go back to the doc if it is still that bad.
