I sometimes do this myself. I think it may do something to the hardware. I think this is because the computer is connected to the hardware and when it is just pulled out it may have a 'shock' because it suddenly lost contact with a hardware device. You could lose some data or blow the USB port resulting in you having to replace it. So to be on the safe side just stop the hardware!!!
Hope this helps!

You could blow out the usb port, which uses a 5 volt power supply to run the usb equipment, or possible the device plugged into it. Better to be safe than sorry, and stop the device before removal. My father in law did this to his computer a while back.

Although it is uncommon, you could lose all of your information on the USB device or it may become a victim of static electricity.

Most of the time it does not effect, unless you did it whilst copying files. I suggest safely ejecting it in the future to avoid something going wrong.

Nothing. I always do it. But apparently if you don't it can affect anything you have stored on the device.

If it isn't in use... (ie, a USB drive still reading or writing) than nothing.

Nothing will happen. It will not blow up. Just as the other person said...your computer will recognize it when you turn on your computer again.
