If I hadn't seen the evidence I would have thought she was lying. Are the standards THAT low in the UK? When she lived here her Spanish was mediocre, she's only been back in the UK a short time.

I'm sure she's just really good at written exams, I knew ppl like that in law school, they couldn't tell you anything on case law but their grades were as high as mine! It's amazing what the human brain can memorize for short periods of time.

Most universities in England focus on grammar and vocab, less so on speaking skills. Plus, I've recently learnt that they also tend to conduct most classes in English, as well as exams and assessments etc. (which I think is pretty ridiculous but what can you do?)
I though everyone did it like at my uni, i.e. everything conducted in the target language, but even so I sometimes struggle with conversing if I've not been speaking Spanish regularly enough outside of class.
Look at the bright side-at least she's trying; too many English native speakers don't bother at all.

Maybe your friend just lacks the confidence when speaking, and so makes silly mistakes she'd never make when writing. You didn't say how long ago she graduated - maybe she hasn't used her languages at all in a while and is a bit rusty. But, boy, with friends like you, who needs enemies! If she's really that bad, why don't you try being a bit more supportive and help her improve instead of being so critical of her!

Fairly easy to pass language classes, can she read and write Spanish??? If so that covers grading for the most part, and spoken language, as long as the teacher understands it, doesn't really matter

There is a difference between a written language and spoken. She probably knows all her words, spelling and grammar rules but is lacking in the pronunciation.

From all the places where I've studied, and all the people I've talked to about it, Englans seems to be the place with the lowest standars in education.
