We have a small Tibetan Spaniel - kind of like a pekingese - and she has a nice large tick right above her right eye. I've removed ticks from dogs before, but because this is so close to her eye, it's really problematic.

She shies away from the comb or tweezers. I've tried holding her head as absolutely still as possible but she wriggles her body, and then also has trouble breathing (they don't have that great nasal passages to begin with) and we're still afraid we're going to poke out her eye.

Short of taking her in to the vet are there any other ideas? We treated her with Revolution right near it, hoping that will eventually get rid of it, but we'd like to physically just remove it if possible.

Wrap the dog in a towel like you do for a cat. That way she can't injure herself.

I did some google searches, and it seems like a trip to the vet is the only reasonable answer if you can't get it with a pair of tweezers. Covering it with oil is a bad idea because apparently it can cause the tick to regurgitate all the blood and any toxins back into the bloodstream. Blood poisoning is probably not much fun. The old burn it with a match is obviously dangerous and doesn't usually work.

So your dog has ticks to, heh? Right, to remove a tick that's close a dogs eye (at least how I've learned to o it) is to pull it out with your hands.. Its easier and you can control what type of pain the dog is going to receive, If you really don't want to do it just take her to a vet.

Vegetable oil over the spot, poured liberally, and rubbed in will suffocate the tick. Then, after its dead, gently pull it out slowly, to avoid breaking off the ticks head in the wound, which would cause an infection. If its a deer tick, a trip to the vet is necessary, to avoid a disease called rocky Mountain spotted fever, which can kill the dog.

Just hold her still and yank it out with your hand. Try grabbing one of her fore paws and rhythmically squeezing Gently as you try to pull it out. This will usually take the dogs attention to the paw when she is focused on retrieving her paw she will not be as aware of your fingers so close to her eye. Use front line year round and you will never have this type problem again

dont try doing it yourself, try asking a vet, because if you screw up, your dog could be in danger

One person hold her and the other just get it and pull.
