Find the cause and you're more likely to find the solution. I'd be very wary of undertaking any treatment such as physiotherapy or chiropractics unless you have a solid diagnosis or you could end up making the problem a lot worse (bitter experience I'm afraid)

Treatments vary greatly depending on the cause, a slipped disk may benefit from physio, a herniated disk and degenerative disk disease (like I have) definitely don't.

I'd suggest going to see your Dr and get a referral for an MRI to see what the problem is - my Dr tried palming me off with anti inflammatory drugs and 6 weeks of physio which only made my undiagnosed problems worse (to the point of putting me in hospital and subsequently a wheel chair)

I've found that massage is of some benefit, sleeping on your front can also help (I found this too uncomfortable) acupuncture is very good (particularly if you also suffer from sciatica) but the treatment doesn't suit everyone. Keep a watchful eye on your weight as this can exacerbate the condition of your back, and just be sensible, don't do any heavy lifting etc.

Some problems can be rectified (or at least alleviated) by surgery but this is something to be discussed with a consultant once you have a concrete diagnosis.

Good luck, you have my sympathy - back pain is right up there with toothache and earache - absolutely awful!

Dear ? : It's difficult to answer your question. Is it your upper back that pains so much, lower back, or the whole spine? Did you check with your physician to find out what's causing the pain? The pains you have aren't normal. Are you underweight or a large boned, heavy-set male? Many things can be causing you to feel this pain, making you miserable. Could be your posture, or even not eating properly. I guess you get the picture, right? My advice is: SEE YOUR DOCTOR. HE'LL PROBABLY SEND YOU FOR SOME TESTS - CT-SCAN, XRAYS, MRI, ETC., FOLLOWED BY SENDING YOU TO A RHEUMATOLOGIST (IF YOU HAVE ARTHRITIS) OR AN ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR (IF YOU HAVE BAD POSTURE AND BONE PROBLEMS). MANY PEOPLE YOUR AGE HAVE OSTEOARTHRITIS. I'VE HAD IT FOR SOME YEARS NOW. BEEN THRU ALL THE TESTS AND THE BEST THING THAT HELPS MY PAIN IS A PRESCRIPTION PATCH, PRESCRIBED BY MY RHEUMATOLOGIST, CALLED "LIDODERM". WHEN USING THE PATCHES, I CAN WALK AND EVEN STAND MUCH LONGER DURING THE DAY. YES, I DO REST IN BETWEEN, BUT PERSONS WITH BACK PROBLEMS SHOULD TRY TO KEEP AS ACTIVE AS POSSIBLE, BUT NOT TO THE POINT THAT YOU HURT YOURSELF EVEN MORE. PLEASE SEE YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY DONE SO. DON'T START TAKING ONE KIND OF PAIN KILLER AFTER ANOTHER. IT WILL BECOME A HABIT AND COULD ALSO MAKE YOU SICKER.

Well, you have some options...
physical therapy
chiropractic
an herb called (Stinging) Nettle, you drink in tea form.
an amino acid called DLPA.
Also, you can begin strengthening your abdomen, which will compensate for the back injury.
