she just had her puppies almost 3 weeks ago (they will be 3 wks old on tuesday) and she keeps on getting up right when the puppies start nursing and going to socialize w/ the family.. does anybody have any suggestions to keep her in with the babies longer?

She needs the breaks, let her go. She will return to them when they need her. They are old enough now to go hours with out milk. At this time her milk is at its most nutritious and sustains the pups longer. If a pup was hungry believe me it wouldn't have any trouble letting mom know.

I remember when my aunt's dog had pups she wouldn't stay with them all the time. If she wanted a break, she'd take one. Kind of cringe-making, actually - she'd stand up and shake them off her teats. They all turned out fine. I'm definitely not a professional breeder and I only visited a few times though, so don't take my answer as a positive "yeah, they're fine." I'd strongly advise getting in touch with an experienced breeder or your vet, though. Just make a quick call and check if it's okay for this to happen. A vet would almost certainly give you a yes or no answer without charging, and it would put your mind at rest. Especially make the call if she never lets them nurse, or if they don't have full stomachs.

The mother is most likely very exhausted. She is losing a lot of electrolytes in feeding those puppies. Ensure she is getting plenty of nutrients to make up for that loss. If you feel she won't nurse them because she wants to socialize, lock her in a room with the puppies so they can feed and she won't get distracted.

The puppies are probably hurting her nipples with their sharp teeth and scratching her with their claws. I would give the mom a rest and start to feed the puppies some pablum (flaked baby food) mixed with water. This way when they do nurse, they aren't so rough because they are hungry.

The puppies have teeth and that hurts. Also by this age their nails are sharp and you'd help the mom out by clipping them. You can use people nail clippers at this age. A lot of moms only stay with their puppies as long as they have to by this stage.

The mother probably knows what shes doing and she will come back. Just in case you might want to call a vet or an expert in this aria such as a breeder.
