weave actually is real human hair in most cases but it can be synthetic too. they are either sewn in, glued in or braided in. And actually its not only african americans that uses weave.......Paris Hilton uses weave to add length....and if you dont want to cut your hair you can use weave to make your hair shorter.....it just adds versatility

It is strips of hair, about 3" in length, human or otherwise, woven together on a little piece of fabric, and then literally sewn to your own hair (do not get the glued version). I love them! When my hair got fried from an inexperienced colorist and I had to cut it all off, and I got a weave. It's awesome. The best at weaving is done at African American salons and I would encourage you to visit one first to talk with an expert.

A weave is a strip of either synthetic or natural hair that is placed (and actually attached with a special glue) directly at the root of your hair. It's usually not placed around the crown of your head as the "track" as it's called, would show through.

To visualize, you would take a small section of parted hair from, for instance, the side of your head. You'd lift a thin piece of your natural hair, apply the glue to the track, and place it on top of the hair underneath the spot you've lifted up. Hope that makes sense!

They attach hair (usually from white people or sometimes it's synthetic) to the black person's hair. This makes it look more soft, long, and smooth. Before they put the weave in, the braid the person's real hair down onto their head.

It's fake hair so their hair looks longer. But don't ask them if they have a "weave". I think that's offensive.
