Weren't they fired, then re-hired when SERCO took the new contract?

The chief priest and Pharisees asked the Romans for a guard at the tomb. They told him of the story that Christ had said He would arise on the third day. Pilate told them to guard it with their own guards. Just before the two Mary's went to the tomb, there was an earthquake and a angel appeared and rolled away the stone. The guards shook with fear during this and fell down like they were dead. Later, some of the guard reported what had happened. The elders and chief priests then gave them a large sum of money, and told them to tell everyone that the disciples came in the night while they slept and stole the body. This story was widely spread at the time among the Jews.

They were put to sleep while the stone was rolled away, that was mentioned in the Bible. Past that they were roman guards, not much point in mentioning them and/or the apostles probably didn't even know. Historically speaking Roman guards who fell asleep on duty were killed. But also traditionally speaking (I've read this in several places but never seen it referenced to a specific ancient work so don't know if this is tradition or known fact) the guards outside Jesus's tome were not killed. Since that Jesus rose again was a known thing that place and time there would have been no reason to kill the guards for failure to preform duty as they're duty was to protect the tome from the disciples stealing the body. Jesus legitamately rose and was seen by many people at once. Since the Romans did believe in intervention from the 'gods' it does make cultural sense that the guards would have been allowed to live even though they had 'fallen asleep' on duty.

It is very early in the morning, before sunrise. So it is still dark. Some soldiers are there guarding the tomb. The chief priests sent them to do that. Why? To keep Jesus’ disciples away. But now something exciting happens.

Suddenly the ground begins to shake. In the darkness there is a flash of light. Look! It is an angel of Jehovah! The soldiers are so frightened they cannot move. The angel goes to the tomb. He rolls the stone away. Look inside. The tomb is empty!

Its definately in the bible account

Matthew 28:2 And behold, a great earthquake occurred; for an angel of the Lord, having come down out of heaven, came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. 3 And His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 And the guards were shaken for fear of him, and became like dead men.........11 Now while they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12 When they had assembled with the elders and taking counsel, they gave sufficient silver coins to the soldiers, 13 saying, "Tell them, 'His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we were sleeping.' 14 "And if this reaches the governor's ears, we will influence him and make you secure." 15 So they took the silver and did as they were instructed. And this saying has been widely spread among the Jews until this day.

According to Roman law. If a soldier was ordered to guard a prisoner, and that prisoner escaped, then the guard would have to serve that prisoner's time or endure his punishment. However, there is no mention anywhere of what, if anything, happened to the guards at Jesus' tomb.

When Gabriel showed up at the tomb, they fell as dead men, after that they went to the Jewish leaders to report on what happened, and, for a small sum of money, they began to spread the lie that those leaders told them to spread - that Jesus did not rise and that His disciples came and took the body while they (the Roman guards) were a sleep.

Read Matthew Chapter 27 and 28. Chapter 28:4 tells us the guards became as "dead men" when the angel of the Lord appeared...

There were guards from both the Romans and the Sanhedrin and when the non-visible midwayers rolled the stone away to allow for the dissolution of Jesus' body they panicked and ran away.
