Joining the military is completly voluntarily. And with regards to why can't they leave when ever they want:
1. servicemen and women sign a contract that they are obligated to fullfil.
2. the military spends alot of money on the training of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines.

It is all voluntary made by you as to what you want but we do have selective service meaning a draft could be imposed in time of major war

You decide to join, then you sign a contract for a specified amount of time. The contract also includes a clause that they can call you back to the Army up to 2 years after you get out if they choose. Joining is your option, but after you sign you're in for that amount of time.

It's an all volunteer Army, and in my opinion will remain that way. The Military equipment has become very advanced, and can no longer be run by just anyone.

You make the decision and then you join voluntarily.
I was in the U.S. Army for 4 years and it was the best decision I have ever made in my life.
GO Army!

For women,it's ALWAYS been their decision.For men,it's a six year obligation,though we haven't had a draft since '72.
Right now,it's all voluntary.
