This is not meant to be offensive in any way!!
We have all read and heard this being discussed openly.
What is the reason for the Muslims doing this?
Is this practise 'good'?
If 'Yes', what are the benefits?
If 'No', what are the drawbacks?

I have checked up to 12 generations back. This is both my father's family and my mother's family. Yes, we do keep records of these things.
I have no trace of a 'cousin to cousin' marriage in my family.

Medical profession has made pronouncements on this and it has been on the news too.
Laws of Genetics require variation. Accumulation of the same genetic characteristics (good or bad) can be prevented.
Is there any scientific (genetics) basis for the practice?

Racism, Muslims are seriously racist and the best way to enure that your progeny are racially pure is to marry a cousin, sister is better but illegal in UK, Compulsory in Khazakstan so I believe from my mate Borat.
Marrying from within the extended family has a powerful influence on the stability of a marriage, ideally the experiences of growing up knowing the same people in the same area gives a broader base than pure lust for a marriage but the Muslim idea of marrying a Cousin fro m another continent is pure Racism

It's not popular for Muslims to marry a cousin, this is a cultural practise not religious.
I believe that the "benefits" and traditional reason for this practise were amongst the "richer" families, so as to keep the wealth in the family. Also to keep the family name.
For the cultures that practise this today I believe it is simply tradition and just preference.
There are no real drawbacks.
There is actually only a very slightly higher risk of married cousins having a child with birth defects.
I've added a link which has some interesting facts.

Well at least you know who your in laws will be so I quess that is something positive. Whe I was 12 or 13 I had a mad crush on my cousin Jerry and I just felt terrible when he married but my family explained to me that IIF we had married all the weaker genes from our families would be inherited by our future children, a definite drawback

In Hinduism it's incest. Most marry as far away from relations, from both the father's and the mother's side. This eliminates the chances of accumulatiing genetic disadvantages.
The short term gain of keeping the economic gains in the family are offset by the long term disadvantages of inherited ill health.

Good question...
Basically what others have said... (the positive stuff)
It's just a tradition.... the cousins are like strangers... so they can marry them....
There are certain people in the family that they can't marry
Question: It is better to marry a non-relative or a relative?

Popular? Yes. Majority? No.
First cousin is allowed since that there's no specific prohibition of it in the Qur'an. The same goes for the Bible and other societies around the world.
Benefits? He/she is a close family and close to you.
Drawbacks? He/she is a close family and close to you.
As for genetics.
First cousins share around 12,5 percents of genes with each other, but their genes were already scrambled once by their parents.
Double first cousins share around 25 percents of genes with each other, but their genes were already scrambled twice, once by their grandparents, twice by their parents.
However, humans share over than 99 percents of genes with each other. Don't want to inbred? Then bred with a frog.

How can it be good to breed with relatives - It's sick and immoral and probably not the wisest choice from a genetic point of view.
