I would say it's not illegal. Immoral. YES! I hope you are not considering taking advantage of people like that.

it depends on where you do it, do they have rules against it, and if you are honest in your statement of what the money is for, dishonesty would be fraud,,,,

you should always keep records of the money taken in, and exactly what it was spent on,, you also if you promise something in return for the money, you must do it/provide it,
with all that said, you can solicit for anything,,,, say money for your vacation, you will include the sender/donators in your prayers,,,,, as long as you do it!

Not if that was all you promised. You might some day be asked to prove that you did indeed pray nightly for everyone who sent you money.

It is not illegal to ask for money, with no reason given or goods/services given in exchange. Its only illegal to ask for money if you deceive people into giving it to you for one purpose and then you convert the money to another purpose or if you offer something in return and don't provide that something, both of which are fraud.

depends on where and how you wish to solicit money,

if you are doing it on the street, many cities require permits to solicit money with proof you are a non profit group

TV & radio evangalists do it all the time. It's only illegal if you promise something that you can't or don't deliver.
