Oh! This is so hard to do!!!!!!!!!!! I have my interests in world (mostly Mid-East) politics, history, and religions------most Americans do not have any interests past the latest movie, new restaurants, complaining about their jobs, etc.,.
I have found the university setting the best place to find them...particularly if that university has schools in these areas. But, one has to live in the right place, and I am afraid I do not.
I do have a couple of e-mail friends that we discuss these issues all the time. Thank goodness for them! And, I have found two local friends.
I do miss the larger group we had on a university-always a group of profs and students with ideas and thoughts. That was a long time ago. Life goes on.

If you are in school ,then they are the ones on the debating team ,science clubs ,literary groups and math clubs. Pick a subject that you are good in and start a conversation using a compliment first. If you are out of school ,look into certain hobbies that require intelligence like numismatics ,exomnia, philatelist and garden clubs ,cooking groups .There are a lot of smart people around ,they just aren`t in bars and don`t hang in the streets.
That is two signs that they are smart.

The same way I pick out a good looking suit. My wife handles it. If I tried it on my own I would just end up with a bunch of drunks and a smelly old dog.
OK, now seriously. Intelligent is not defined by universities or occupatation. Just look around you and hang around people who you respect for their good sense. Be a person who displays good sense yourself.

If you will try to pick intelligent friends you will only find intelligent or shrewd persons not friends.Friend is a person whose likes and dislikes you like if really not you try to.Better you try to find intelligence in your own friends

Libraries, universities, have you thought about asking a question to try and gauge their intelligence? This is a really dumb question by the way.

By first asking people what books they have read (if any) and listen to their conversations.
By joining interest groups, amateur astronomy, or protest groups etc, etc.
By not hiding ones own intelligence.

move to cambridge, MA (harvard, MIT, etc) --- and they may be intelligent but this also carries some other problems (self centered, egotistical) some of the time... just like good looking ppl - some are jerks.

like attracts like
you will find that you draw people to you , who are similar to yourself
i say this respectfully and not intending to be rude
but if you feel that you can increase your knowledge , then as you do so .. your circles of friends will probably change in the process
