If you asked what's so good about Firefox here are a few things:
1.It's a lot safer than IE
2.It's a lot faster than IE
3.You can customize it
-------with hundreds of free extensions to add more functionality ( like download from YouTube, control your media player from your browser window; block aggressive advertisements from a web page, zoom pictures on any web page......... and many, many others).
--------and new themes to change its look and feel.
4.If you want your browser to do more, chances are that someone made an extension just for what you need.
5. Get the extensions here from the official site https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/extensions/

there are things i like about firefox, things i like about IE7. IE 7, I am in love with the search tool at the top right hand side where you can add ANY search engine you want and search a site without going to the site's top page. I wish Firefox could do that. I like the way IE7 does the tabs much better than firefox the buttons ar bigger and easier to work with. Firefox: I like the way you can change the look of it to anything you want, I like the built in spell checker, I like the add on tools you can download, the extensions. A lot of them are very useful. IE7 is still lagging behind in this area. I don't like the default font firefox uses, the letters are too thin and hard to read for someone visually impaired such as myself. I've been playing with the font and still haven't gotten it quite right.
Try Opera out as well. Opera has far more features than firefox, the major turn off fror opera though is they package opera with all of the features turned on, most people won't ever use them all. The look of opera is overwhelming until you go in and turn things off, get rid of buttons you won't use. Once you have it simplified to your tastes, it's a sweet browser.
Netscape is exaclty the same browser as Firefox, only crippled. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would have firefox and netscape on the same system. redundant.

response to sarah: IE7 supports activex, yes. But they can no longer "sneak in" anythything through activeX. IE7 will tell the user and make him or her confirm before it is allowed to install. that's the default setting. IE7 is the first Internet explorer since version 3 that is NOT integrated into the OS. They gave up on that concept because of security issues. Good riddance! Anyone using version 6 is flirting with disaster in my opinion. With all the great choices out there, there is no reason to expose yourself to those activex security holes anymore.

The most common argument is that Firefox has better security features, which i have yet to see how is true. IMO, IE7 has paralleled firefox in the security aspect and is looks slightly better in terms of design.

Another point is also speed. Some claim Firefox is faster than IE7 in loading a page. The difference, if any, is negligible to me.

I use both browsers by the way, but I still prefer IE7!

I couldn't either reminds me of the good old days of netscape v IE and IE won and still does today.
Majority of web users don't care about all the browser politics wagered by the competitors as long as they can look at webpages, do their email and play Yahoo Pool they are happy.
Similar to Linux users who think the world cares, most people want what is popular and universal and games work on without having to see if there is a Linux version of some software. You usually know that there will always be a microsoft version as standard.

As for firefox rich features, most people don't use them people just want to browse and not worry about the whistle and bangs baggage.

Lastly, IE looks better in design.

There is nothing better in FF than in IE7. People say you can customize FF...do you know how to do that. You can get to all the code in firefox and you have to reprogram stuff in that to get the look to change. You *can* do it, but that doesn't sound very convenient.

Security, well IE7 is just as secure as FF now...

Faster...actually it's not. Go to http://www.firefoxmyths.com for more details.

I'm not interested in the pro Linux or anti MS 'debate'.
The fact is that FF is safer than IE for 2 main reasons;
1) FF does not support Active X. (In IE its on by default.)So malware writers have a harder time trying to sneak malware on to your pc.
2) FF listen to hackers and plug the security holes with regular updates; MS doesn't.

Ignore claims that FF can 'prevent viruses or spyware'; it can't. And it can still be hacked. You still need to use common sense, and run security software.

Add the Adblocker plugin for faster browsing.

You don't get hackers screwing you on FireFox. IE is always hackers' favourite target, no matter how much improvement they make. This stays true so long as Bill Gates is the richest person on earth.

Since IE is the most common browser, most hackers target it. They can infect more users that way. FF, Opera, Flock, etc. are less common browsers but work as well if not better (and faster).

Well, you may never find out, because its not loads better. Still, make sure that IE 7 is still your default browser.

I use IE 7, Firefox 2, Opera 9.02 and Netscape 8.1.2 and there is hardly anything to separate them out. Its for the software experts to find which one lags in what.
