NO!NO NO! people, all you are doing is teaching him to allow you to grab his foot, lol!
Ok, two step process. Teach your dog to sit first. This is the first part of shake. Teach sit by taking a treat and putting it over the dogs head and making him look up. Use your other hand to gently guide its bum to the ground, saying "siiiiittttt" until he gets the idea to lower his hind quarters. THE SECOND his bum hits the floor say "good sit!"and treat at the same time. Repeat until he has that bit, but quit as soon as he has lost interest or isn't able to focus... puppies have short attention spans and I never recommend training one trick any more than 5-10 min. at a time.
Once sit is taught, you are ready to teach shake. Put him in sit. Then you are going to take a treat (like cheese) and hide it in your fist in front of him. Let him sniff at it, and try to lick it out of your hand. Eventually he will take it up a notch and paw at your hand. AT THAT SECOND , open your hand and say, "good shake!" and give him the treat. Repeat over and over, you will notice each time he will start pawing at it faster and faster.
When he finally has the idea that the treat in hand comes with offering a paw, you can move to the next step... holding the treat in the left hand while shaking with the right. He will stare at the treat, but do not give it to him until he offers a paw. This trick needs to be taught over time, takes about a week or so. Have fun and good luck with your pup! -dd

well, first, have your dog in a sitting position.
Nest, get down to his level and say "rober, shake a paw?" then pick up hs paw with a hand - use the same hand evvery time at first and shake it as you say good shake a paw!
Through repitition and some treat reward nd praize, the dog will understand what you want him to do.

Say "Shake" and then grab your dog's hand and shake it up and down. Keep doing this and eventually he/she will learn.
