I shoot Nikon. The N55 is an entry level Nikon SLR. I don't know how much you want to spend, but you can find really good deals in film SLR cameras now. A Nikon F100 that sold new for $1300 can be found in mint condition for under $400. I had a guy offer to sell his N90s, which was a top of the line consumer Nikon for $100, and it was fresh from a clean and service.

Either Canon or Nikon build great cameras and have a large range of lenses and accessories for any budget. If you can, handle each one and see which seems better in your hand.

Which is better? Chevy or Ford? Porsche or BMW? Mercedes or Lexus? Nikon or Canon? These are all unanswerable questions as they are all "the best" in their class, depending who you ask.

If you have no personal preference, perhaps you would do best by going with the recommendation of your local camera shop pro or a friend who has something that he/she likes. If you have someone who is willing to help you learn how to use a particular camera, add ten points to that brand in your decision making process.

I loved my Minolta until I started taking photography classes.
If your wanting to eventually purchase lenses and extras such as filters, Nikon and Nikon compatible products are more readily available, often less expensive and are easier to find used.
