My daughter has a puppy that is about 4 months old. About a week ago she was walking up the driveway from the bus, her puppy was trying to get to her from across my neighbors driveway. he just happened to be getting home at the same time, and hit the puppy. My daughter seen him do it, she says he didnt slow down, didnt try to avoid him or anything. I took him to the vet and he broke his leg. The vet bill was 130.00$ . I am a single mom that works two jobs just to try and make ends meet. I went to the neighbors house and asked for help with the bill( just help not the whole thing) He said he couldn't because of Christmas. Now his wife and him live in a very nice brick home with a two car garage, they have about 5 vehicles, and I know they could have helped a little. My question is .... Why are people soooo mean now ? He didnt even say he was sorry!!!

I live in the country and I called the sherrifs deptartment about it, they said there is a leash law even in the country so basically there isn't anything I can do about it. I have always gotten along with me neighbors, have been neighbors for 7 yrs and sent Christmas cards, got fruit baskets for them , he has cleaned my driveway out in the winter and everything. As far as keeping the pup in the yard, I do keep him in a pen at night and during the day when nobody is home, but I don't want him in there all of the time, that is one reason I moved to the country. Also my neighbors dog is in my yard constantly, not that it bothers me or anything it's just that I think he could have been a little bit nicer about the whole thing.

I am so sorry to hear abt ur daughter's dog. I love dogs altho I couldnt keep one. I've had so many accidents like that with my cats and I almost had a fight with the driver who ran over one of my cats - right in front of me! I couldn't take it, I threw a bottle at his car and he pretended as if nothing happened! as if he didn't care! my cat died and I was depressed for about a week, not because of my cat's untimely death but how cruel people can be. some people just stop caring as they feel belonged to their material possession and killing a dog or a cat just seemed less important or something not to dwell on and it would waste their time. Don't give up, I love dogs and I don't even kill ants or flies, unless I have to. But never purposely.

I would talk to the cops and tell them what happened and show the cops the vet bill and ask them what you can do. you will also need a lawyer. I would sue the man. I am so sorry about your puppy. I watch judge Judy everyday and seen people sue others for the same thing. also have the cops give you a copy of the report so when you go to court, you can show the judge. have copies of everything. you are suppose to keep your dogs on your land. if your neighbors dog is always on your land then you can complain also. I still say speak to a lawyer

I know I'm probably going to get downrated for saying this, but, it isn't the neighbor's fault. Your dog was not leashed and was on his property. My dad shoots warning shots at any strange dog that comes on our property, so there you have country living. (in my dad's defence, he does have cows to protect, he has had calves killed by packs of strays)
You should have an emergency fund for your household, of $200-300. That would have covered this bill. If you don't, talk to the vet to see if you can make payments. A dog is a financial responsibility as well as a behavior one.
Don't be mad at the neighbor for not being able to help out. You don't know the situation behind that nice brick home. I have a two-car garage, but I'm wondering how in the world to afford Christmas presents for my own folks. If he has cleaned out your driveway, well, there's your help with the bill. It would have taken you a good bit of time or money to do that yourself, right?
I truly am sorry about your dog, but even in the country, a leash is necessary.

The vet bill isn't very much. Besides YOU Should keep your dog in yr house, on a leash or chain (a lite chain). It is your responsibility to keep yr dog safe. Yes- the neighbor was wrong and should have been willing to pay, but LET IT GO! Live and learn! luckily the dog is still alive and little damage has been done. Mom- you need to have more of a hold on your dog. The dog doesn't know any better, but you do! Yes-many, many people are Mean, Nasty, Stupid- that's why YOU need to be SMART and CareFUL!

You might want to seek legal advice on how to go about this one, explain what happened, the bill was $130.00 only is there anymore coming. In the mean time stay away from those neighbors you don't know what goes on behind closed doors. I'm glad the puppy is still with you guys, you might want to keep in close sight in the mean time until you get some answers, there are alot of people like that and get away with alot of things for their own self gain..

Did you confront this man right after the accident? was he aware of what happened? Did you call the police? file any kind of report, or create a paper trail? (proof of guilt) Did he acknowledge his guilt for hitting your puppy?
You will have to eat the cost if he isn't willing to or you can't prove his guilt or afford to drag him into court.
Mean people suck that's for sure, but why was an untrained puppy allowed to have freedom off of a leash? Responsibility starts with the owner.
I hope things look up for you financially. Good Luck.

Sorry but, it is your responsibility to keep your dog out of harms way. Your failure to control it is why it got hurt. Your neighbor has no reason to pay the bill regardless of your or their financial circumstances. Never allow a dog to enter someone Else's property unleashed. The neighbor could be more compassionate but even if you call the police they will tell you the same thing.

He should help because it IS Christmas.
I can't say whether it's his fault or not. He obviously thinks it's not his fault. Maybe he's expecting an apology from your daughter for not controlling her pet, - and that he could have caused a bigger accident trying to avoid the dog.
Does the dog do his business on HIS lawn??

Take him to court, along with copies of your vet bills. You don't even need to pay a lawyer.
