This is an anchient custom found in thousands of different cultures from Africa, the middle east, some Germanic tribes and throughout Asia. It is to cover the Father's loss...The daughter can generate wealth and power for the groom (having male children), so the father of the bride needs compensation for the gains he could never have through his daughter.
