My dog attacks other dogs, help?

I noticed that she attacks others when I pet the other dog. I tried punishing her and twacking her in the nose but it doesn't help.

Keep in mind the type/breed of dog you have and that may explain some of this behavior.

If you know that your dog will attack another dog if you pet it, I suggest not petting another dog while walking your dog.

This behavior could be partly due to socialization, or lack of.

If your dog "attacks" another dog while on leash only, it could be a sign of fear aggression, because your dog feels like it's flight ability has been taken away due to the confinement.

Do not punish her for this behavior. Punishing her will only make her see other dogs as a source of the punishment. She will not understand it is her behavior that you are "punishing."

I highly suggest you seek a behaviorist in your area to help you modify her behavior.

Don't pet other dogs in her presence. She get jealous, murderously jealous. Wacking her on the nose is counter productive, to say the least. If she attacks other dogs without you having petted them, then you have to keep her away from other dogs. If it only happens when you pet other dogs, and otherwise she gets along, then the fix is easy. Quit petting other dogs. And don't be a pill about it either as if you just have to pet other dogs. If you feel that way, get rid of your dog and get one that is not a jealous golden retriever or some such.

My dad has two Belgin Shepherds and they are nice dogs. They just hate other dogs. You can do nothing about this type of behavior. Your dog must be kept away from other dogs. It is your responsibility to do so either keep it on a leash or in your backyard.
