This is a very interesting question, but I'm afraid that the answer as to why we yawn is still quite a mystery to science. Actually, there are several aspects of human/vertebrate behavior that remain quite mysterious - such as yawning, shedding tears while crying, sleeping, etc. Scientists have simply failed to provide satisfying reasons for these behaviors to exist - though there are of course many theories - all unproven.

I read somewhere (don't know where) that if someone yawns and you yawn immediately afterwards then you are in empathy with that person. How true this is I don't know. I must be in empathy with loads of people, as I am always yawning in the company of others, even that or just plain bored ! ! ! ! (Only joking, about the bored bit I mean.)

this dates back to times when monkeys were the most evolved. when the leader of the group or alfa mail yawns is a signal to the rest of the group that its now safe to sleep becouse he has now let his guard down meaning its safe so they all did the same and that makes them yawn

believe it or not, your question caused me to yawn. they tackled this question on mythbusters. the same thing happens when you're in a room full of people and someone coughs, everyone starts coughing

this has puzzled me all my life too
could it be that a sudden reduction of the oxygen content in the air of the immediate surrounding makes everyone unconsciously inhale for dear life?
i hope a scientist sees your question i would also love to know the answer to this one.
