Because people, by and large, want to be led, not be leaders. Few people are able to accept that when you're dead and buried, that's it. No divine reward, no reunions with loved ones long gone. It would be nice to know that there is something past this life, but for now, it's only a belief, at best.

Besides, if done well, creating your own religion can be very profitable.

L. Ron Hubbard, through his own research found that people didn't have the correct answers to the mind and spirit.

After having done extensive research into resolving problems of the mind and finding a workable method of resolving it, he wrote Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health. This gives you the true data about how the mind works, its parts, why you react the way you do, etc.

The more people learned Dianetics, he discovered there was more to it than that. He then clearly found the fact that people (spiritual beings) have lived before. Through further research L. Ron Hubbard began to explore into the nature of the spirit, its capabilities, ways of increasing your own potential making you more able, etc. Thus, after finding various answers, Scientology was formed. You can study more about it here:

Scientology is a new religion. It is expanding fast. It has many members because it provides a workable solution towards greater sanity and higher states of spiritual freedom.

Friend anyone can Created, a religion, & I don't mean Created in the term as God is creating something, But there is only a few that will accept the truth, That the Apostles of Old has brought to us. When you have vertin True Ministers that God has used, Humans forget to look on the spiritual side of what God is doing & begin to look upon the man that God is using, I do agreed that we are to give honor where honor is due, But beyond that, That Minister is only an instrument of God.

L. Ron knew about easily exploitable human desperation and accordingly marketed specifically to such people. Here was his process:

Recycle self-help methods, throw in an angle of spirituality, also make sure to condemn a roundly accepted method of treating mental illness by inventing a medically unproven and very expensive healing "technique". Make the "technique" somewhat akin to hypnosis and very self-affirming. Convince prospective members that it will cost them no more than a trip to the mall, but in the end, manipulate them into spending thousands upon thousands of dollars paid directly to the church.

People are always searching for answers to lifes tough questions and also for boundries, or guidlines, if you will. This leads some to their own conclusions or to create their own religion. Others looking for the same thing, will sometimes follow whichever seems to best fit their lifestyle, answer their questions, or makes the biggest impact.

It was not easy.
Jesus was persecuted, captured and sentenced to die in the cross for heresy.
Muhammad lived under the treat of death and was constatly moving from town to town.
People attack new ideas, that just human nature. You are just being bias by saying it was easy.

I think so many people are desperate to believe ANYTHING that they will latch on to any made up theories or religions, as long as that religion tells them what to think and do. This relieves them of the responsibility of thinking for themselves. Scientology is a terrific example of this.

you want an exciting philosophy on which to base your faith, something sparkling like having 2 Gods of equivalent ability, who're ambivalent in the route of one yet another and who favour human beings who sacrifice salamanders to them. because you've faith philosophy is basic, you could no doubt make up the archives. attempt interpreting some Umberto Eco, in case you pick truly tougher philosophy.

Joseph Smith didn't "create" anything...the fulness of the gospel was restored by Jesus Christ through him.
Thanks for asking though.
