Bound's hubby here:

When you say gun, do you mean handgun or any type of gun but a revolver?

Power is not everyhting in shooting. Power is good for dropping big(ger) game, but you have to be able to place your shot! You will not learn good marksmanship skills by buying and shooting a mountain-moving magnum as your first gun ... and the cost to feed it will quickly keep you from the range.

For a first time gun owner, I would suggest you buy a .22 rifle or pistol and learn good marksmanship skills, and then move up to something bigger (when you realize you won't need power to stop your target)!

Good luck!

I know this is not what you asked. A first time gun buyer who just wants to go shooting should not get a powerful handgun. A short list of reasons.
1. controlling recoil is a skill acquired with familiarity with guns that don't have a lot of recoil
2. powerful cartridges are more expensive thus you will shoot less
3. Until you are more familiar with guns, powerful guns are unpleasant. Thus you will shoot less
4. ALL OF US (though some will deny it) will develop a blink or a flinch from firing even a .45 for hours. thus you will shoot worse

The body has a few natural reactions to loud sounds and recoil. To overcome these reactions you have to move up the power scale of firearms. Overcoming these reactions makes you accurate and very fast (what I am interested in)
first time gun buyer should get a 22 ruger mark iii. I just can't stress this enough. 2 cents a shell!!!. Really, get skills. If you are buying this to go shooting why do you need power. I hope you listen you will feel better about your purchase.

Edit: Dammit bound I was writing this while you posted now I look like I am just repeating what you said.

You want a gun, not a revolver? Do you mean a handgun? If so that only leaves the autoloader. Since you stated that you want something powerful that leaves out the small, concealable self-defense pocket pistols (.380acp & such).

Well there is, of course, the .45acp which is fun to shoot and accurate and a stopper but not adequate for hunting. The .10mm has as much 'power' at a hundred yards as the .45 at the muzzle. The .357 Sig was designed to have the same stopping power as the .357 Magnum but in an auto-loader. NOTE: .357 Sig and .357 Magnum rounds are NOT interchangeable. On paper they are close in power with the magnum round still having the edge.

Then there is the Desert Eagle in .357 Magnum, .41 Magnum, .44 Magnum and ('more power to you') the .50 Caliber Action Express. How much do you want to spend?

If the above are a bit too much there is always the old .9mm and the newer .40 S&W. Glock also came out with the .45 GAP (not interchangeable with the .45acp) for those with small hands who still want to shoot a .45 caliber pistol. If ammo availability is a factor than go with the .9mm or good, old .45acp.

Good luck.

H

P.S.

Browning (first post) is correct, some .9mm have more 'muzzle-flip' than the good, old .45acp.

If you're a first time gun owner a revolver is best since it is mechanically simpler and far less likely to misfire/jam ect.

You said a gun but never said pistol/rifle/or shotgun for a first time gun owner I'd suggest a pump action 20 guage shotgun preferably with a barrel combo since you can hunt any animal that wouldn't require a lottery with it, can target shoot both stationary and clays, and it makes an effective home defense weapon. Also the gun itself and ammunition is relatively cheap.
Slug ammuntion is powerfull enough to kill deer/human with energy to spare at 100 yards so it should suit your purpose.

A .22 Long rifle in semi-auto is also good, either pistol or rifle and yes Ruger arguably makes the best. Its about the weakest round made but as a beginner shooter you dont want something like a Desert Eagle in .50AE. It would be like giving a 16 year old the keys to a Hemi Charger.

Most everyone here has given you excellent choices. I am assuming that you are referring to a handgun??? I really like my CZ75 in .40 S & W. Find a dealer for Ceska Zbrojovka firearms and ask to look at one. That's what I would recommend to to first time gun buyer. Easy to handle, great craftsmanship for the money, and excellent accuracy. Not much kick and a very good choice for self defense. Of course, there are hundreds of choices out there, so you should find some local people who are into guns and go see what they are shooting. Visit a firing range and talk to shooters. Most will be happy to let you test fire their weapon if you express an interest in guns.

For power on the cheep I would have to say the CZ-52 untill the .357mag came out it was the the most powerful hand gub in the world. The price will be about $140.00 - $175.00 mags $16.00 - $19.00 ammo for S&B it will run about $12.00- $14.00 a box of 50. The CZ52 fires a 7.62x25 85-86gr FMJ round nose 1447 - 1900 FPS. Will shot under a 10 inch or under group at 100 yards. I have 2 when you shot all you can say is wow.

I totally agree with Bound. If you are already familial with hand guns and are looking for the next step i would go with a full size 9mm(beretta 92 Cz75 Browning high-power) with the right ammo they are a great defense round, and nothing besides the 22lr (and maybe 12ga.)is cheaper to shoot at the range.

.45 M1911. A cheap (but perfectly fine) peice will run from 350 to 450. Try Rock River Arms and Springfeild.

They are tried and true. It went with our fighting boys from WWI to Vietnam. It will teach you the inner working of an auto loader without ever being too complicated to put back together. It will never fail due to dirt or grime locking up the slide.

And, the .45 is the only load i will trust for seld-defense. But, it is very easy to fire in the M1911. A 9mm kicks harder if you ask me.

I love these guns. It is my favorite. Hell, look at my screen name.

Oh yead. Great Question
