Openoffice is includes in Linux. It is an epic tragedy that more companies, governments, and individuals don't use it. Office is bloatware that businesses are pretty much required to "subscribe" to at exhorbiant rates. I know there are some areas where it is not up to Office, however, for the average user it is more than adequate. It is even far superior to the Microsoft Works program.
Now, the file extensions are compatible with someone using Office. Previously, this wasn't always the case.
Google purchased Writely and offer spreadsheets to put a tiny dent in the amount of people using Office.

I've been using Open Office for awhile and haven't had any problems with compatability. I'm waiting to find out from my Online U if I can use it for my coursework. May have to go back to MSO :(
