He might hesitate now to go outside, just because you did leave him out there.
I just had this happen to me the other day except my poor pup stayed out there for his bedtime. I have a chihuahua , and I could hear distant barking but I thought it was the neighbour's pooch. Not until the morning I realized it was him, I too felt really bad, but got him all warmed up. For the next couple of times though he would not go outside so I would have to stand out there with them and he bolted to do his business and was right back at the door so I would not forget him. How I forgot him in the first place is beyond me ( I could them when they come in---I have 5!!). Anyways he is over it and loves me still, your pooch will be fine, just watch him the next couple of times so he knows you are there.
AND HE IS FINE.....

If your dog has a full coat of fur then your little shitzu is probably just fine physically. Dogs are hardy and can take the cold better than we can.
I would suggest letting your dog rest for a while and then play with him to re-establish a good bond with the dog. Taking him for a walk will also be nice, then they will learn that being outside is not a bad thing, but always better with the master.

If he isn't used to being out in cold, snowy weather, then you should take him to the vet. The idea that dogs are "weatherproof" is absurd, if not dangerous. Many smaller breeds have not had to have thermal undercoats, because they are not bred to be outside dogs. If he is a mature dog who is used to the weather, then you have to consider that something else may have happened to him while he was not in your care. Perhaps someone gave him something he should not have had, or kicked him, etc. You owe it to your friend to get him checked out.

Whatever normal cold is. Normal cold in Florida is different than normal cold in Wisconsin.
You've done all you can do. If you are worried, and love your animal, get him to a vet.
Glad it wasn't your child you forgot.

If you are really worried by his behaviour, just let your vet check him out, he could have caught a chill that's left him out of sorts, or something more serious. To put your mind at rest, off to the vet!

Maybe he is just trying to make you feel guilty. Give him some treats and rub his belly.
Seriously, I think he will be fine. He is probably just slightly traumatized by being left outside alone when he is not used to it.

How strange is he acting? If it wasn't so cold and he's not a puppy. I don't see why he shouldn't be OK. He is a dog and not made of china.
