I have a cockatiel that is 10 months old. She chews on everything and poops everywhere. I love her but my husband wants to get rid of her because of this what can I do. How do I train her. I have tried puting her in her cage whenever she does something wrong but it is not working. She chews on wires, buttons on remotes. Anything rubber, paper, wood, plastic, shoelaces, zippers, toys. Basically anything she can get her beak on. She is out of her cage probably 4 to 5 hours a day. She is my baby. She follows me in the shower anywhere I go. As soon as she sees me she is marching to come out. She has 3 wooden perches, 1 swing and stairs, a cuttle bone and 3 toys in her cage. Her cage is 2 1/2 feet tall by 1 1/2 feet wide. I will try anything. Any feedback will be much appreciated.

She has chew toys around the house. A basket a cork and 2 other rubber ones from the pet store.

Your girl might be going through a "teething stage". I am not an expert, but from my experience with young 'tiels, this behavior subsides with time and patience. This habit seems to be at its worse when a bird is molting. Their feathers get very itchy and they seem to chew out of frustration when they don't have another bird to preen them. I suggest sitting down with your bird, and gently scratching her head and upper back for a few minutes. Not only will she love you for it, you will be able to train her better.

Also, 'tiels explore their world through their beaks. Your girl might already be bored with the toys in her cage. Try filling a small plastic plate with items like low sodium chips or cheerios, a wide rubber band or plastic straw, scraps of plain paper, chemical free grass clippings, etc. Place these items in her cage while you are able to keep an eye on her. Take the items out when she is finished playing. It also helps if you establish a daily routine of "in time" and "out of cage time". She will be much happier if she knows what to expect.

And last, it is possible to potty train your girl if you are commited. I suggest saying something like "uh-oh" every time she goes. Watch for subtle signals from your bird... like taking a few steps back or wiggling her tail. Quickly pick her up and let her poop over a square of TP. Eventually, she will make those squares her "drop zone" if you place several within her reach.... that is, if she doesn't chew them to pieces first...lol.

Just be patient with your 'tiel. She sounds like a sweetheart, so don't give up on her. Good luck!

I understand you problem. If you see the bird chewing on your stuff, say "NO" and put the bird with its own chew toy. I have a sun conure that loves wires and pencils. He is out all day, and he is getting the message that some things are not his. Make sure your bird has toys she likes to chew.

the best way to do this is to buy her a few chew toys and just distract her away from your belongings. If she is loyal to you then Hopefully anything she sees you playing with (chew toy for birds) then she will follow!

Get her some chew toys. Like some wooden blocks that are bird safe (I highly recommend getting them from a petstore, that way you know they are not toxic)
