Rice was used at first but now sometimes substituted for flowers .
Rice has been used as a symbol of fertility and as a wish for a "full pantry" in various parts of the world from ancient to modern times. In the past, rice was not the only thing thrown at the bride and groom as the left the wedding. Wheat, instead of rice, was thrown in France, figs and dates were thrown in Northern Africa, and a combination of coins, dried fruit, and candy was thrown in Italy. In some European countries eggs are thrown!
Since rice is harmful to the birds that eat it, birdseed has replaced it for most weddings. Flower petals, confetti, baubles, and balloons are often used today instead of rice.

Lots of funny answers but here is the correct one: Many years ago the Churches, almost around the World, banned Confetti, as it was far too difficult and expensive to clean up. Flowers being thrown "over" the Bride and Groom, is for Luck! and it is only carried-out in certain religious weddings, not all. Similar to the "braking" of the "glass" at the end of a Jewish Wedding. All Tradition! I say keep it up - we haven't many Traditions left!. Merry Christmas.

The flowers are looking very beautiful and holy so in the wedding ceremony pepole like to use flower.

I thought they threw rice at the end of the wedding as the couple leaves the church, and the "bouquet" throwing was at the reception,( the bride throws it behind her, and whoever catches it is supposedly going to be married next.
Or maybe another answer to this question is, they throw it because "that's what everyone else is doing, and they want to fit in"

its a romantic geture as petals are pure a lot of churches dont allow it. i got married in robert the bruces abbey ( very scottish and patriotc i thot) which was his castle and i wasnt allowed to throw nothing so make enquiries before any arrangements are made

they don't in Poland (we throw glasses-for good luck, and then the bride throws her voal, and groom-his tie:)
