Anyone know a good and safe place to shoot guns outside city limits near or around the phoenix area? The closer to Gilbert the better.

Are you looking for an actual rage or a mountain with a great backstop and few people to hit.

Yes there are places, although they are rapidly shrinking due to the almost unending developments going up. My dad has not dove hunted for his first time in years, he lives in Phoenix, because it takes a 3 hour drive to get to where the doves are. And for him it just isn't worth it.

You are going to have to drive awhile, Tonto national forest is closed off to target practice due to the high amount of people doing so, but then again it is a big forest and if you drive northeast more they probably wouldn't care. There is the rifle range at Usery Mtn. Park, that you pay a small fee and can shoot all day at targets. But, to go and just have fun by yourself is good too and you can do that out towards Casa Grande there are few places. There is even the police shooting range which is vacant and not advertised it is desert mounds with no facility. There is nothing too near Gilbert, it will require a at least a 1 hour drive unless you go to the shooting range. That is the problem, Phoenix has grown and there has been no rifle ranges been built or even areas to conserve the natural desert landscape. Even the Rio Salado Gun club is in danger which is what the range is or was called I don't remember if it changed. They put up houses near it and the people complained of noise and almost got it shut down, even though they were there later, and now the city councils don't want the liability of the shooting range so none are really springing up.

I don't really know of exact places. Everybody has there own and I don't want to tell everyone where they are as they will be overused and then not good anymore because someone will mess it up and the police will take away the spot. Ask friends or other hunters or even a gun club maybe someone knows of an area. I used to live in Chandler and it has been awhile since I lived there. I live now south of Tucson, there you can go shooting anywhere in the mtns.
Also, be careful don't shoot on the Indian reservations they are all around and some on the way to casa grande they will take away your guns.
If I were you I would drive into the desert out past Casa Grande or up north more there are lots of places, you can obtain a forest service maps and find roads to get back where you won't do harm to anyone or annoy anyone with the noise.

Sorry can't give you much more than that. Happy shooting!
