Why do some people believe a day in the bible is something other than 24 hours and a week is billions of years? What compelling evidence do you have for this explanation? I just want to know so don't get offended

This is just going to be a question that is hard to answer... There was a scientist that I met that he and some of his colleagues questioned a lot of stuff and they were talking about Niagara Falls and the Lake/River before and after the falls... They also worked with some geologist and they conclude that it was formed by a great flood...HMMMM.... It was VERY interesting, I wish I could remember this guys name because he had a web site and he traveled to churches with his power point presentation... How with technology that stuff is getting more explainable and some people still don't believe things happened in the Bible. I love science, so this was very intriguing... wish now that I would have got a degree in something in science instead of law...

Well i was just speaking to a good jewsih friend about a jewish expression. From the rising of the sun till the setting of the sun can indicate a day or a period of time in the Jewish culture. The earth per the bible is of Great age. You have to understand that this planet was hear long before modern man. There was a angelic world here at one time. This earth as been judged two times the first time was the ice age, That is when satan rebelled and God sealed up the stars of the heavens and everythign froze. The next time the earth was judged was when the earth was flooded. Noah! The next time is when Gods spirit will send forth wrath on all of creation. That is why we have the scripture not by power, nor by might but by my spirit saith the Lord. The word of God is always point in many directions at once. In this scripture we see a revelation about the world and the planned judgements of God. The means of each destruction and the conculsion of the Judgements.
If you will notice in the creation story in Gensus one there are two times when light comes forth. No the forth day you have two lights given one to rule over the day and one to rule over the nights. At first glance this appears to be just natural light many may think it is the sun and the moon. But i think you might better understand this math involved. This is the forth day. In the 4000 year period of mans time God gave us the spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ and the holy spirit. These are the great lights of the forth day. So God has said in his word with God a day is as a 1000 years and a 1000 years is as a day. What is God saying here Well numbers in the Jewish faith have played a great role from the begaining until now. Mans day on the earth are to be 7000, the last 1000 years are the reign of Christ. So 6000 years will be completed on the earth before the next return of Christ. Per the jewish calander it is getting close to 6,000 years. Now in the creation story states God stopped working and rested on the 7th day. So the 6 days of creation in genisus 1 are really refering to a little more then what people are looking at. This is a real problem area for most people. But God is showing us that he is Lord of the creaton and that he has planned the whole things out from the beginning. Even the day of salvation and the day of judgement. Now how do i know all this. pray and fasting and pray and fasting.

The length of time in the creation story is often used as a test of orthodoxy by people in the Christian word. If you don't believe in a literal, week of seven 24 hour days then you are thought by many to be heretical.

The problem, of course, is finding a strong second reference somewhere else in the Bible that confirms the 24 hour days. No such reference exists. Using the long chronology developed for the Bible Time project it is 1) easy to show what the chronology for the creation week should be, and 2) where the confirming second Bible stories are found. The answer is surprising because the creation week story is likley pointing at God's creation of mankind, even though he uses rather strange language.

There is a scripture that says to God a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as a day.

What you are discussing is the debate among "New Earth" Christians and "Old Earth" Christians. New Earth Christians believe that God created the world in 7 days, those being actual, real days. I am a New Earth Christian and the God I worship doesn't have to take "billions and billions" of years to create the universe.

Old Earth Christians are generally newer in the faith and are attempting to rationalize the secular worldview age of the earth and Darwin's theories with their faith, so they say that when the book of Genesis says that God created the universe in 7 days they really mean a billion billion or whatever years because of that scripture verse I quoted above.

It comes down to this, if you can believe in a God that said "Let there be light" (Gen 1:1) then it's easy to believe the rest of the bible. If he created water, he can certainly part it and walk on it.

the six “days” of Genesis 1 cannot refer to six twenty-four-hour days, since the sun which makes day as we know it is not created until the fourth day. The six days of Genesis 1 must refer to six periods of time during which God did a certain work. As 2 Peter says, "With the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day" (3:8). Indeed a day could be a million, a billion, a trillion years, depending on God’s ways of working.

If you're talking about creation, it's because paleontological/geological evidence can't be reconciled with a seven day creation of the world with man included in it. It forces a Bible vs. science debate. If the world was made in six 24-hour periods, science is wrong.

The Bible says "But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day." 2nd Peter 3:8

That's where they are getting that from. With what is our thousand years is like only a day to the Lord.

In the bible it says that one day with God is as a thousand days here on earth. Therefore 7 days in heaven, one week would be around 7000 years on earth.
