Because we do happen to witness incidences where they cannot be explained scientifically. Or you could say it's just a coindicence but I believe, in some extent, "super-natural power" moulds our perception on the existence of God. Of course, like you said, bible, culture and society do play their roles in establishing a more solid belief in God. From an atheist perspective, he might think that people believe in God cos they want to have a sense of being protected and a belief that there's always hopes from another part of the world. It is not bad after all to have God in our heart as humans are weak and need guidance. But the sad part is that we humans misinterpreted the Bibles and too obssessed with our very own mighty God that we disrespect other religions. There shall be no respect to those who distort the teaching of a religion.

I believed in god because I was sent to sunday school for a long, long time. Some point in my life I started asking questions about what I was taught, and I realized that despite my upbringing I disagreed with a lot of it. I guess you can say I don't have the faith that others might have for a religion.

I'm agnostic, but unlike many others and atheists I've met, I'd rather learn about religion, any religion and appriciate it rather than bash it upon mention. Like last week I was reading about how chapters like Matthew and Luke had other materials that were not related to Mark, and there is supposedly another source known as the "Q Document." The bible indeed is a very good read.

from Wikipedia

As a philosophical abstraction, goodness may represent a hope that natural love be continuous, expansive, and all-inclusive. In a montheistic religious context, it is by this hope that an important concept of God is derived —as an infinite projection of love, manifest as goodness in the lives of people. The belief in such hope is often translated as "faith", and wisdom itself is largely defined within religious doctrine as a knowledge and understanding of innate goodness. The concepts of innocence, spiritual purity, and salvation are likewise related to a concept of being in, or returning to, a state of goodness —one which, according to various teachings of "enlightenment", approaches a state of holiness (or Godliness).

What I believe in is a creative force in the universe. I believe this force is governed by certain laws of attraction and reaction to all living beings....basically, Karma. I arrived at my beliefs after being raised Christian and exploring many other religious and spiritual philosophies, and pursuing my own path to some kind of enlightenment.

Ultimately, I came to the realization that religions were the constructs of societies attempting to control, explain and preserve glimpses of enlightenment that helped them understand the complex world around them.

Unfortunately, I think that religion is absolutely destructive to the spiritual development of human kind and civilization. Witness history, and the news.

I would find it impossible to not believe in God. Look at creation, babies, different animals and the way they adapt. This isn't all coincidental! Pray for God to give you faith in Him and see what happens. He will answer; there is your proof.
