Are there any social, cultural or historical reasons? How tollerant are they to the tollerant budhists?

Recently there was a documentary, was it on History or National Geographic, about how a Hindu temple in India was destroyed and replaced by a Mosque some three hundred years ago, which radicalized the paciffic by belief local Hindus, and how today they want to buid their temple back on the same spot. I come from Yugoslavia, having my own background; experience and opinion, so it would be most fair to let you peoples vote the best answer. I myself am still searching for some final modus, trying to balance the viewpoints that differ milions of confronted people, specially those against my people who suffered a mediatic satanization. Hatred here is so deep that the truth; the real reasons why there was a war, has become a tabu even between ordinary people, and religion is just one color in the complex spectrum. This issue is related to the Kuran, religious hatred, social, economic and historic factors, media manipulation and political gaming which enters through the pores of human nature.

Well, recently in Afghanistan (this is under the new "democracy", NOT the Talliban), a person who converted from Islam to Christianity was sentenced to death. He would have died if it weren't for huge international pressure.

That's why Muslims are seen as intolerant.

... I should add... I understand that this behavior is condemned by moderate Muslims. And that's definitely a good thing!

There are few reasons as Muslim i can tell you. First of all you have to notice social nature of humans that when they feel threatened they get more hard and defensive about there beliefs. You should see the conflicts, Muslims are dying every where. In middle east, Kashmir, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. So Muslims feel that we are bullied and as defense mechanism we are getting more conscious about our traditions and values. Same as Americans who lost 2000 men on 9/11 and they in turn killed 6 million in Iraq. But still we are tolerant, Recent example is Lebanon, Christians and Muslims stand together against Israel .Muslims are living in west are also example of tolerance. The thing is media management by western bullies resulted in generalization of the thought that Muslims are extremists which is also wrong.

Not true for the most part.
I live in a country where 90% of the population are Muslims, but Christians are embraced, as well as people of other faiths.
Christain as well as Muslim holidays are celebrated to the max.
People that are intolerant of others are usually ignorant, do not have free thinking to create free will and most often have a low educational background.

Perfect Happiness: Now and Forever

[41:30] Those who proclaim: "Our Lord is GOD," then lead a righteous life, the angels descend upon them: "You shall have no fear, nor shall you grieve. Rejoice in the good news that Paradise has been reserved for you.

[41:31] "We are your allies in this life, and in the Hereafter. You will have in it anything you wish for; you will have anything you want.

[41:32] "(Such is your) ultimate abode, from a Forgiver, Most Merciful."

Do Not Follow Your Parents' Religion Blindly

[5:104] When they are told, "Come to what GOD has revealed, and to the messenger," they say, "What we found our parents doing is sufficient for us." What if their parents knew nothing, and were not guided?

[5:105] O you who believe, you should worry only about your own necks. If the others go astray, they cannot hurt you, as long as you are guided. To GOD is your ultimate destiny, all of you, then He will inform you of everything you had done.

No Compulsion in Religion

[2:256] There shall be no compulsion in religion: the right way is now distinct from the wrong way. Anyone who denounces the devil and believes in GOD has grasped the strongest bond; one that never breaks. GOD is Hearer, Omniscient
[2:257] GOD is Lord of those who believe; He leads them out of darkness into the light. As for those who disbelieve, their lords are their idols; they lead them out of the light into darkness - these will be the dwellers of Hell; they abide in it forever.

The Most Important Commandment*

[3:18] GOD bears witness that there is no god except He, and so do the angels and those who possess knowledge. Truthfully and equitably, He is the absolute god; there is no god but He, the Almighty, Most Wise.

The Media

Because a lot of them are. Unfortunately, so are a lot of Christians. Its not Islam's fault per se, its that Islam is being perverted for political reasons. Islam is supposed to mean "peace". Moderate Muslims are opposed to terrorism because it goes against the teachings of Islam. Jihad was meant as a response against the Crusades, and it is also meant to be the struggle within one's own mind of good against evil.

I have to answer "Ania"....If a Christian man blows up a bus because he's a CHRISTIAN then you can bet your sweet bippy that the Media will report that fact too (that his Christian faith had something to do with his actions)...A Muslim man that would blow up a bus...not because the bus-driver made him late for work...but because this Muslim man is on some Jihad is motivated by his Islamic faith...and as such it would be VERY proper to call him by his chosen religion or whatever....

I think is mostly has to do with the blood thursty nature of most of the terrorist that are mostly muslim and the fact that they have a quran telling them to kill the unblevers. And there religious leaders are telling them to kill unbelievers. So if you are not tollerant of others religions people are going to notice is you are killing people by the droves.

Regarding infidels (unbelievers), they are the Muslim's "inveterate enemies" (Sura 4:101). Muslims are to "arrest them, besiege them and lie in ambush everywhere" (Sura 9:5) for them. They are to "seize them and put them to death wherever you find them, kill them wherever you find them, seek out the enemies of Islam relentlessly" (Sura 4:90). "Fight them until Islam reigns supreme" (Sura 2:193). "Cut off their heads, and cut off the tips of their fingers" (Sura 8:12).

If a Muslim does not go to war, Allah will kill him (Sura 9:39). He is to be told, "the heat of war is fierce, but more fierce is the heat of Hell-fire" (Sura 9:81).

Muslims must make war on the infidels (unbelievers) who live around them (Sura 9:123).

Muslims are to be "ruthless to unbelievers" (Sura 48:29).

A Muslim can kill any person he wishes if it be a "just cause" (Sura 6:152).

Slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush. (Koran 9:5)

I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers, Smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger tips of them. (Koran 8:12)
They should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides. (Koran 5:33)

Now, you guys read this and tell me why these bastards are intolerant. Their blood is made of poison. These dirty verses have been taken from their crap religion.

I think the reason why muslims are intolerant is not because of historical or religious reasons, but because the world has allowed islam to get away with far too much for far too long. If the world had bothered fighting fire with fire with these bastards from an early age, I am sure that these dogs would have been more disciplined.
