My girlfriend's mom just got divorced and I rent from her so I can see the heartache that comes from a marriage ending. She is depressed, doesn't want to leave her room, smokes 2 packs a day and is all around sad.

I don't think it's as necessary as it used to be. If you stay single and save your money then you can ensure that when you get older, there will be a home to take care of you. You can also adopt a kid if you want to be a parent. I personally like to be alone, even though I'm in a relationship, I don't tend to get lonely. She wants to get married, but I'm not sure if I'm a good candidate to get married. My brother just got married and man, what a mess the wedding was...i say if you get married, get eloped!

If you are both from the same country, fine, no problem. After a few years of living together you will be recognised as a "common law" partnership. This is only advantageous when requiring any benefit or tax-break that would normally be given to only married couples. A history of utility bills with both names on them going to the same address will be enough proof.

If you partner is from a different country, get married. The bureaucratic hassle otherwise is just a nightmare.

If you are just talking in general, not either to get married or to live as some body's partner then its a little sad. True, one shouldn't settle until one is ready and many never settle down ever, but if a person is never to be mature and caring enough to look after another, I think they can never achieve full understanding of the society in which they live.

It's up to you. I am 47 years old and I am not married to the man I live with. He just doesn't believe in ceremonies, so I am going to continue to respect that. We've been together for a long time. But we both have wills and we also have in writing that the other is next of kin, in case one of us has to be in the hospital or something.

No its not necessary for a person to marry. One can live withoult that also in the young age, but at old age, you will feel that it had been better if I got married at time, otherwise at this age you can survive any how.

Don't get married coz everyone does it blindly. My 2 brothers are unmarried & my mom used to worry a lot as society does not leave you alone & they used to put her in the guilt mode.
Marriage must happen when you meet someone & dont feel like staying apart even for one day. Then you dont even agonise whether you want to marry or not. Until that happens dont rush. dont worry just chill !

well, this isn't an insurance question. But it's cheaper and easier to live married to one spouse your whole life.
