Good grief. This is _so_ wrong, in professional racing today.
Racing costs huge amounts of money. Sponsorship is everything. A driver needs to present a good image for his sponsors.
When Jack Roush held his "DriverX" competition to find someone to give a ride to, they didn't just race. They were interviewed and taped. They had to do a commercial. The results counted when Mr. Roush picked someone to give a ride to. They counted a lot.
If you're as good as Tony Stewart you can get away with being a bit rough around the edges. But he's an exception. And even Stewart does commercials well and gives a passable interview.
If you think this is not important, you'll never have a career in racing today. Don't get me wrong. You also have to be fast. But speaking and dressing well will get you opportunities that you wouldn't get otherwise. And being really bad at it will destroy you in the sport.

I have followed racing for 46 years and until the past 6 or 7 years it was a sport of men bumping-rubbing-racing. After races now certain drivers have to whine to the cameras he was done wrong, someone would not move for me then they run to the NASCAR trailer to cry.Now it has turned into a frappin' beauty contest."he has pretty eyes, his butt looks good,etc..."that's crap. The 43 best should hit the track and race.Leave GQ to the news racks.
Cut out the guaranteed top 35 throw out the provisional and let the "fastest 43" qualify and if Gordon or Junior or Johnson-Harvick-Kenseth etc do not make it oh well try next week.
I know this will not be a popular answer but the real racefans will see this would make better racing.Theothers will be angry and vote as a bad answer.Sorry to offend them but if I want to see a beauty contest I'll watch Miss America.

Absolutely. I will not deny that what you have stated is absolutely true when it comes down to how a driver races. However, there is nothing wrong with fans talking about things that you may not consider "important" about racing. The drivers are people, just like all the fans....and the fans have curiosity about things that have to do with a driver's personality, looks, etc. In fact, in CAN (not always!) be a way to pick a favorite driver. For instance, I really like Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin. Not only are they superior drivers, but I love their personalities...that's one reason why I like them both! So be careful about what you may think is important, because there isn't actually a rule saying that fans cannot like things that possible are superficial about drivers. Racing is always the most important, but the other stuff can be fun, too.
And don't put down baseball, either. Although I am not a fan of baseball, I don't think you should stuff stereotypes into the sport of baseball. That is really stupid of you...you are acting like the stereotypical NASCAR fan with a closed mind. Don't make the NASCAR fan base look so bad.

everybody calls it racing, others call it research. i call it both. i'm into the Le Mans Series of Racing along with Formula 1 and LMP1 and LMP2. Those are what i call real race cars and real races. not just circle tracks. i mean listen to this. 500 miles, in a circle. How exciting, not. C'mon almost anybody can go in circles. U want real races, look at the ALMS, F1, LMP1 and 2.

Well speaking, dressing and looks have become important in Nascar. These guys represent some of the largest corporations in the world. Personally it doesn't matter, but unfortunately it does to the sponcers

Alot of people do get what racing is all about. More fans at a racetrack than any baseball game. To each his own.

I agree. It's not about looks. I love NASCAR for the racing.
But, sadly, I fear that some people only like NASCAR because of those things. Because they think a driver is 'cute' or whatever, it annoys the heck out of me! Looks don't drive a race car, you have to have talent to do that.

Things important in racing:
Being able to tell a tailpipe from a steering wheel
Being able to stay out of Smoke's (or as we call him now, Choke) way.
Being able to be understoood, forget redneck, and focus on each syllable. (This would be Stay in you car, Sterling (Marlin), Elliot "I may need a ride Sadler, and the other Tennessee boys.
Being able to get a date without using the yellow pages. How was it, Choke?
And last but not least, being able to successfully turn left all day on Sunday.
AND if these things ARE important to you, you are my new racing buddy.
