Share it with someone who can handle it. A wise, mature person or a therapist if necessary.

It depends on what your secret is and how it will affect others. If it is something that will cause suffering to someone else, then it is better to not reveal it or you will have a double burden. The need for confession seems to be built into the human psyche. Do you have a priest, minister, or a mature wise person you can reveal your secret to?

The truth will set you free, but it also has consequences. Are you ready to accept the consequences of revealing your secret? If not, then keep it for now. Although, it may be possible that people can find out anyway. What will you do if that happens?

Few things are "always" true. I think that you can judge for yourself whether to share your secret. The main thing is that if you do share, you need to know that the person you share it with won't turn around and criticize or punish you for it. Perhaps you need to talk to a professional about it first, a counselor, pastor, doctor, etc.

The question is: Is keeping this secret affecting you negatively? Do you feel that this part of your life needs to be shared for you to feel good about yourself. Does it make you feel guilty not telling her? If it's not going to bother you and if it might hurt her, why mention it at all? There's things about me my family doesn't know and has no reason to ever need to know, so why tell them? We all know that some truths are painful. Lies definitely have their place to protect us from what we don't want to know.

EH, this depends. I just got caught cheating in the wierdest manner possible. I broke contact with the chick I cheated with, and chalked it up to a stupid mistake and vowed to not do it again. I got caught almost year later. Girlfriend feels hurt, betrayed and can't trust me. I think if I would've came clean right away, it wouldn't have been as bad. Remember, what goes around comes around and this will come back to bite you in the most unexpected way possible.

it does. no matter what your secret, it will make you 1) feel better that you've told someone 2) help you make a decision, if that's what you are trying to do 3) it's very liberating. this is something that you've held for a long time and apparently its weighing on your mind. you'd feel better for having shared it.

If you lie then it is something that will nag at you for a long time. And try this one on a lie my wife told me a lie for 15 years and it just ended my marriage.
