Ok ive got realy bad panic attatcs i been having them for a few months now, ive beeen in nd out of tha hospital thousand times. and i try to relax myself nd shyt but it dont work!! i quit day school cause i was gettin them so bad, i quit smokin nd drinkin cause i kno that intensifys panic attacts. so they put me on lorezepam and i freakin hate it, it kinda works but then again it makes me really dizzy,sick,tired,drowsy,ect. nd these meds. dont work that great. so idk wat else to do??? i was thinkin therpy but i dont think thats gonna stop panic atacts all together.So wats else should i do?? i dont wanna be on no more meds. either!

you first need the diagnosis confirmed.
you need to have hyperthyroidism ruled out and some other simple blood tests.
cognitive behaviour training is very effective about 85% for panic attacks.
I think the antidepressants such as paxil or effexor are better for panic attacks than lorazepam.

Panic attacks are caused by the brain's "danger" signal misfiring.
I've had them for 7 years. I tried meds, but it made it worse,so I stopped. I've learned that the best way to deal with them is to make them happen and see that you will live through them. Find out what triggers it and either work through it, or work around it. Like for me, going into new places, malls, and crowded stores triggers them. So I shop later in the evening when there aren't as many people. Or having caffine makes it much worse, so I don't go to those places right after having my morning coffee.

It helps to have someone you trust to help you through it. When I know that I will have them, I ask my husband to go with me. Having a person to be there is comforting and then they don't last as long. The more you have them and find that you won't die, the less frequent and less intense they become. I don't think they ever fully go away, but it does get easier.

When they are happening, breathe normally. Repeat to yourself that you are okay, you will get through it. Sometimes a nervous habit will help ease you... tapping, twirling your hair, etc. (whatever comforts you). Try to find a less crowded area until it goes away... this will help with the feelings that everyone is looking at you which makes it worse. Excuse yourself to the restroom and put some cold water on your neck.

You need to report the side effects of the lorazepam to your doctor so he can try something different on you. Just because one med didn't work doesn't mean you can't try something else. There are lots of different meds to choose from but you may have to try several to find the one that works the best for you. You might want to consider some meditation and see if that helps. Also with therapy they can help you learn ways to deal with the panic attacks.

You need to be on the right kind of meds; lorazepam can stop an attack as it is happening, but as you have found out, there are also side effects.
You need to ask a doc for a prescription for an SSRI. The brand Celexa is a well-known anti anxiety medicine. It can re-set your brain chemistry. You take it for several months to a year. It doesn't alter your consciousness or anything, like the lorazepam does.

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.

Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

Therapy does work. I take meds for my panic attacks also. It would help to do therapy though.
