In my unit, they have a policy that the TC of a vehicle is supposed to be an NCO or higher. On the other hand, the TC doesn't need a driver's license. How the heck do you control a vehicle if you aren't trained to use it? If you haven't had driver's training, how are you going to know how to ground guide? Is it normal in the Army for a TC to not need a military driver's license for the vehicle, or is my unit just weird?

Every unit I've been in requires both the driver and TC to have a license. This is for a few reasons.

1. The TC is the one in charge, he/she needs to know (be qualified) on that vehicle in order to make qualified decisions regarding it. Also, as a leader, you must be able to lead by example, and its rather hard to tell your soldier to PMCS a HMMWV when you have no idea how to do it yourself.
2. Depending on the vehicle, the TC and driver may switch positions, especially on long convoys or missions.
3. For liability issues, should an accident occur an investigation will be conducted. If it was found that the the TC was at fault (inproper ground guide, inproper supervision of driver, etc) and then was also found out he did not have a liscense, the Commander of that unit would have some explaining to do (in a bad sort of way).

I just read AR 600-55 and I didn't see any where that it said a TC needed to be licsened. We have the same policy in my unit, I am a TC, I am not liscensed on my tank but I did have to go thru a 40 hour TC course. This course is designed to certify NCOs as TC/VC. I have been a TC in other units and also was not licsensed. I think it more depends on the commander and the local unit policies. Division and higher commanders usually will set these policies.

Man, AR 600-55 lays it out. TCs must be licensed on the vehicle they command. If your unit is violating this, you should get a copy of the reg and change that practice.

I've never seen a unit where the TC doesn't need a license. It's weird. And I've only ever been in Infantry divisions...

I'm not sure how the Army does things. I am in the Navy and we have to have a valid drivers license and a government license to drive a gov vehicle. Rank doesnt matter as long as you have your licenses.
