Okay.. Let me first tell you that going all defiant about it is not the way to go trust me. My mother and I went around about stuff like that when I was 17 (I'm 21 now). If you maybe try talking to your mom, tell her you're not 5 anymore and you'd like her to lighten up on you. In return you have to be helpful.. I mean tell her where you're going and what time you'll get back (or call if you wanna stay later). That's all my mom was looking for from me only I didn't realize it until I took a sweet 6 month grounding and we finally sat down and talked about it. No you don't really have to "listen" to her like that, but show her a little respect and you might be surprised at how lenient she gets with you.

I was there not too long ago. Yes you have to go to bed. Sleep is good for the body and mind, so just relax and go to sleep. Your mom will always be in your life so pick your fights. This is an important concept for parents as well as kids. Until you are 18 you should just listen and if you have an honest concern sit down with them and present both sides- listen carefully. If she doesn't allow enough freedom explain to her why you should be allowed to do what you are asking and the benefits it can bring. That is the type of professionalism I used and it pays off!

Sleep is essential for health, so she's probably just looking out for you.
Yes, you may be 17, but you hardly seem adult. I'm sure you're still in school and your mom is paying to support you 100% with the exception of money you may earn at a minimum wage job that you spend at the mall.
Show her some respect and listen. Or, if that isn't an option, grow up, get a job, move out and start supporting yourself.

You mean that some one is telling you when to go to bed?
If you live at home it isn't unusual for every one in it to sort of have the same hours.
Or parents think that children need their rest.
It is important to have the proper amount of rest & it is so easy to stay up late & then sleep too late. This can become a bad habit.
As a parent it is important to us that our children get to adulthood
in one piece & able to cope with life.
You should always listen to you mother & others who have been around for awhile. They have seen much more of life than you & they want to spare you a lot of greif in life by telling you of things that can go wrong.
As time goes by what she says will have less impact on you life.

Ok your still 17 right? and as long as your attending school and living under your moms roof you still have to listen to her until you turn 18 she just wants the best for you. and everyone needs their sleep because if no one ever got their sleep then everyone would be moody, cranky, grumpy. she just wants the best for you and time she may get on your nerves but hang in there until your 18 and get a job and move out.

I hate when people answer questions with answers that looks like they didnt even read the whole question. Sure yer body needs rest, but when yer 17 you shouldn't have to listen as long as yer being quiet. I'm 14 and my Mom lets me stay up half the nite if i wanna.

After several days of no sleep you will start to hallucinate, have muscle spasms and feel really bad. Sleep deprivation is considered torture under the Geneva Convention. I have a 17 year old daughter and I'd ask her to answer your post, but she's asleep right now. ; )
