Usually a combo of both. Appearance will draw them in, but attitude will make all the difference.

What a girl wants is appearance (does he look like an ex-con or the boy next door?)
What a girl needs is attitude (will he curse your mother out or will he defend your honor?)

My son. It doesnt matter what girls like. Just stay away from drugs, eat well, dont smoke, workout every day, continue your education and women will be attracted to you for just yourself.
And if these females arent attracted to you, who cares? Go read a book or workout. It is unnecessary to try and create a version of yourself based on the expectations of a female.
Compare it boxing or Mixed Martial Art. In a contest, you dont want the other fighter to control you, do you? You dont want him to impose his will and create the decisions that you will be making during the contest? Definetly not. You want to control the match, and dictate the pace of the action.
You need to understand yourself completely, whatever it is, and carry yourself with confidence. Females are incredibly simple, regardless of all the mumbo jumbo that people might tell you. Females find confidence incredibly sexy, regardless of whether you are a nerd, jock, painter, whatever. Once you are in control of yourself, you will be able to better dictate the pace and depth of your oncoming female relationships.
