If it is, then I'm getting one. But I heard there are doubts over their effectiveness, not sure. And they're are supporters who say they're better than pepper spray and hand guns.
What do you think is a good self-defense weapon?

A Taser is the most effective and safest weapon to have in your home or car!

Most people don't know the difference between a stun gun and a Taser.

Stun guns are the less expensive direct contact weapons that range from 100,000 to 900,000 volts with low current and require you to touch the attacker with the device. Ranging in price from about $10.00 to about $100.00.

A Taser is a device that fires two darts upto 15 feet and conveys 50,000 volts at a high current. This device allows you the option of an increadibly powerful stun gun by doing what's called a "drive stun". M-18 Tasers cost about $300 to $500 depending on the options.

FOLKS these are the best thing I have ever used. They are less messy than guns and guns are designed to kill people and although I carry one of those too - I have to say the Taser is much less of a legal headache when you use it.

It works on drunks and drugies
It works on big, small, old and young
It won't kill you if you accidently shoot yourself or a family member with it

I strongly suggest you get one!

Tasers ARE NOT OUTLAWED FOR CIVILIAN USE. The Supreme Court ruled that Tasers have the same Protection under the 2nd Amendment as firearms, they are considered to be one in the same. Tasers are an Excellent first line of Defense. I carry a Taser, extra cartridges, a handgun, and a stun gun. I will guarantee if you let the Perp ride the Lightening 30 seconds and if he still is not compliant you keep hitting him until he smells like cooked pork. They work fine on men drunks, People that threaten you, aggressive panhandlers, and many more Irritants that it is in poor form to use a hand gun on!

No. Any weapon that can be used against you is not a good self-defense weapon. If you miss, and the perp gets ahold of it, you're toast.

85 people have died as a result of the police use of tasers. Many states have prohibitions against citizens' use of tasers.

The Taser is a non-lethal defensive alternative. It is better than pepper spray which usually works but can blow back in your own face. In Texas civilians can purchase Tasers with cartridges that have a ‘shorter’ reach than law enforcement cartridges (Enough said about that—no sense revealing how far LE cartridges will reach!) A Taser (new) will cost as much as a quality, modern auto-loader. They are not classified as firearms as Taser cartridges use a Nitrogen gas pellet to propel the darts. You really should be trained in Taser use before you depend on one for self-defense.

Do they work? I’ve had to use one on seven occasions. The first time I deployed my Taser: Long story short, it was eight ‘five-second rides’ before he stopped resisting and he allowed himself to be handcuffed. He stated he ‘got bored’ and that pain was a question of mind over matter (to which I replied, “If you don’t mind sir, it don’t matter).

Second time: Crack-head also resisting arrest. After a half-second ride he literally begged me to stop and he volunteered to cuff himself and start walking to the jail (true story). I suppose the word got around because the next five times all the subjects stopped resisting arrest immediately upon seeing the red laser dot on their solar plexus and a couple of them even threw themselves on the ground and put their hands behind their back to be handcuffed.

A cautionary note: We have lost at least one peace officer when he opted to use his Taser rather than his handgun. This was against an armed suspect. It was not the Taser failing; I understand he missed and the felon did not.

If you are going to purchase a Taser, get training and know its limitation and most importantly, when to use it and when not to resort to it.

I have used both I find pepper spray with a high capsasian count works the best you can hit the person at least 20ft away incapacitating them quickly a taser works but if the person has on thick clothes it is hard to penatrate. 99.9% of the time if I know I will have to use non -lethal for an arrest I will use pepper spray the other .1% I dont is lethal which is a tough call.

Well we use tasers at work and they work great. If you want to get one for self defense get one that shoots prongs. So that you are not at such a close distance. Good Luck

Tasers are illegal for citizens. Forget pepper spray, which might also be illegal in your area. Your best defense is to run away. Most martial arts studios offer short self-defense courses that will teach you how to get away from an attacker. This way you won't have to depend on always having a weapon with you. The best weapon is your body and mind.

Good tasers are to expensive and cheap tasers won't do the job properly. Go with a Glock 23C with .40 S&W hollow point bullets or any other portable firearm. You have 10 bullets or 11 if you chamber one and reload the 10th. 11 .40 S&W HP is more than enough to drop a dirt bag of a criminal. Am pretty sure one good chest shot will drop anyone. Or if your serious a head shot will do a nice job too but more bloody. In all which ever weapon you choose make sure your confident with it and know how to use it properly.

You have to be Law Enforcement to have a taser, I think. You can carry a stun gun, pepper spray, and depending on what state you live in, with a concealed weapons permit, a gun.

Remember, no matter what you carry, make sure to be proficient enough that it cannot be taken away and used against you!
