the ways that a person gets recession is by lack of hygein. when bacteria and deposite stays under the gum it forms a hard mineral deposit called Calculas. the body defence is to shrink the gum and most of the time the bone to stay away from this buildup. as the bone receeds it takes the gum with it thats what causes recession of gum.
what other people are saying about tooth brush is not the answer because hardbrushing causes abrassin on the tooth which means you'll get a ditch on your tooth by the gumline .and if no stoped it will cause ur tooth to get sensetive and most cases it will hit your nerve . the best teq to brush is by circular motion never up and down try to use left hand so less force. or get sonic care toothbrsh or oral b
good luck

My husband has this problem.. They told him to use a soft brissel tooth brush and also don't brush so hard.. Brush three times a day and also when you go to the dentist ask the dentist to show you exactly how you should brush just because you do it three times a day theres actually a right way that many people don't do or just doesn't know about it. Also if you drink a lot of soda i'd lay off of it a little bit. They are known for being very acidic a few very acidic sodas are Mountain dew, Coke, and Sun drop. Since he's done this it actually hasnt receeded as much.

I have this problem too. You need to stop brushing so hard. Get the softest bristled toothbrush you can and brush your teeth and gums gently in little circles. Also, floss daily with a gentle gum care floss. I have been doing this for a year now, and my gums have healed and have even come back a little.

Don't brush too hard (i.e. with too much extra force), and maybe ask your dentist for the best advice. Otherwise you might have to get a type of gum surgery, where (I think) they get tissue from the roof of you mouth, and graft it to where your gums are receding. Then you'd have to refrain from physical activity for 2 weeks or so, among other things, I'm sure (i.e. eating solid food, perhaps)!

You need to go to a dentist or an oral surgeon. They probably will suggest a tissue graft (taking tissue from the roof of your mouth). Don't wait until it's too late to do much. By then your teeth may loosen and you could begin losing them.

Get an electric toothbrush with soft bristles and see you dentist or hygenist to show you how to brush your teeth properly.
Recession does increase with age hence the expression "long in the tooth"
