I just read the responses to a question "I believe in god but not the bible..." and was botherd by what I read.

People were saying things like "how can you believe and god and not the bible" and "is that even possible" and "the bible is gods word, to not believe in is it to not believe in him"... completely oblivious to the fact that its not a Christian god. There is like a thousand religions out there, what makes yours right? What makes a bible any more accurate then the Koran? Nothing, only your believes. To imply that you are right and they are all wrong, and that someone cannot know god without knowing your god is just arrogant and rude. People can know a god that is completely independed of any specific religion and text. I know because this is the God I am familar with.

Any thoughts?

I agree with you. There is no reason to believe, unless you are stuck in a particular religion, that there is even only one God.
I believe in a "Great Spirit", who is represented in a number of forms called "God" or "Goddess" each with their own names.

I get thumbs down on any post where I mention that I'm a Pagan. It will probably happen here.

My philosophy is that whatever anyone believes is fine for them. When they claim exclusivity to truth, they show themselves wrong because truth exists everywhere. In the Bible (In it's many varieties as there are more than just the Protestant and Catholic), In the Koran, The Tao Te Ching, the Tarot, the Kabalah, the writings of the great philosophers, and many other places.

I happen to believe that the Great Spirit, or God, revealed itself to people everywhere in ways that they would understand. Forms of worship may be different, but to claim that one small group is right, and that everyone else is a worshiper of the Devil is simply confused.

Whatever... I just try to do the next right thing.

Very interesting thoughts indeed!

I agree with you in that certain statements come off as arrogant and rude; Assuming everyone had the same upbringing as you did, or the same background information that you do is more than slightly pushing it.

To further it, there is a tendency towards intolerance of others beliefs and systems. It all goes back to thinking outside your own world and sphere and whether or not you have the ability to do that - your situation and theirs could have easily been the opposite! Yet you expect them to have the same belief systems as you do.

However, I think that having an "arrogance" if you will towards what you believe is necessary to some degree. Arrogance might not be the proper word to use but if you believe in something, you darn well should think that its the most perfect infallible religion/thought that ever exists ... otherwise... why would you be believing in it?? The problem comes when people try to push that pride onto others, and what you have is a large misunderstanding, and some fuming minds.

I pray that we can all become tolerant towards one another, respect each other as human beings, and realize that not *everyone* thinks alike.

i think God, being God, gave people an instruction book. that being the bible? people who have so little faith that they think God would let the men who wrote the bible make mistakes, they prove their faith in God which is very little. also i think people of all 'faiths' in God will be saved even though i think they need Jesus to get to heaven because God knows people's hearts. good Q

I having a hard time with this concept.

The Bible details God's works. So, you believe in God, but not anything He's done? Am I getting this right? Am I missing some critical point?

This is making my head hurt

THE PERSON SAID
"I KNOW GOD, BUT I DON'T BELIEVE THE BIBLE"
THEY SHOULD SAY IT MORE CLEAR.
THERE ARE MANY gods.
BUT I SERVE JESUS AND BELIEVE HIS WORD.

You seem to think that religion has something to do with logic and reason. It doesn't; it has to do with "We can kill you."
