I usually do it when i'm using more than one number in a paragraph. Like say if I were going to use the number 6 here, and then explain how it can be neat if you add a nine to it.

As has already been stated, you spell out numbers up to ten. You use numerals when the number is 11 or more. However, you always spell out the number if it is the first "word" of a sentence. Two hundred would be an example of spelling out 200.

I'm not sure if there is a "cut off" number. I do know, however, that you use actual numbers when you are giving measurements, etc. (2 1/2 cups water). You always spell out the number when it begins a sentence... "Four people went to the movie." Not sure if this helps... but here it is :)

My English teacher said that you should only write a number with an actual number when it's over a hundred.Otherwise it should be spelled out. so ... ninety-nine, one hundred, 101.

I was taught to spell all numbers out under 1000. It depends on how you are using it. If it is temperature, money, or something along those lines, never spell it out. If it is people or things, spell it out. The line is fluid on those kind of things. Good Luck!

My 7th/8th grade history teacher (a reliable source) always said that you should spell out all numbers less than 100. She stressed this especially for formal writing.

When you are speaking in numbers you use numbers (in math equations) and when you are speaking in words (like in a story or letter) you should spell out the numbers (unless it is time or you are illustrating a math concept).
Peace!

When it's TEN and under. Using the actual numbers is improper and it just looks bad.
