Excellent question. There are private jails. Talk to martha stewart about that. If you commit a white collar crime you are eligible for a state approved private jail. They are not lock down but if you run away you will have a warrant issued and go to state or federal jail.

Yes there are some prisons that are private. While they still could be considered State or Federal Prisons, from time to time governments do contract out to private companies to run a correction facility.

There are 100's of private owned prisons ( not jail) they are operate and rent bed space to various county, state or federal inmates.

even facilities ran by private companies, have to follow through with city, state, county, federal, requirments, and are at the mercy of that government
