In all reality, neither. The real connection with God is in Him. It has nothing to do with what I think or how I feel. (Read John Ch. 15)
But to answer your queston...
My feelings/emotions tend to run ahead, and my thoughts eventually catch up.
But the truth is both are important, but neither is 100% reliable. It is important to be mindful of your own ways of thinking and emotional patterns. Control them, and do not let them control you. But also understand that God is greater than us (man) and His ways are higher than our ways. When He works in us and connects with us, it is His doing and it goes beyond all of our understanding (and intellectual and emotional comprehension)

I'm more connected to my deity through pasta. Eating a big bowl of linguine is a religious experience for me for I am ingesting the very being of my god, the Flying Spaghetti Monster. That's why I have pasta at least a few times a week.
