Alright, here's the deal: cookware coated with teflon has been pulled from stores nationwide because it has been found that subjecting that non-stick substance to high temperatures causes it to break down, and release toxic fumes into the air. Lovebirds at my uncle's restaurant were always dying pretty quickly, as their cage was located kind of close to a kitchen exhaust fan. So now we're pretty sure why -- that teflon. Anyway, that's my hypothesis as to why the pet birds in question kicked the bucket. Get rid of your teflon cookware... do a little research about it yourself, you'll see I'm not making this up... it didn't make major headlines and I have no idea why.

Probably not. However, there's lots of things in the kitchen which can cause enough fumes to kill birds.
If a pilot light on a gas stove blew out... the gas fumes will kill birds. So will spray cleaners with ammonia (like Windex), oven cleaners, bleach, or a lot of cooking oil vapors in the air.
These things will also kill aquarium fish.

Yes it could. Vapours from hot spicy food can contain particles which will inflame a small animals digestive tract etc (eg chilli powder etc). It depends on the foods though and the amount/type of ingredients used. It's exactly the same way that toxic fumes kill any animal. Levels which are safe for a human may be fatal for animals and pets....

No, I don't think so, but you might want to have poison control to come out to check your house for a gas leak asap!!! Canarys were frequently brought into Egyptian tombs as they were being excovated, and they are brought into natural mines as well to serve as "natural gas meters." If the birds would die, there was poisonous gas in the air. Please check on this soon! Sorry about your loss :(

NO! Birds systems are different from Mammals. What is hot for mammals doesn't affect birds. Mine eat habaneros one right after another with no effect.

I haven't heard about spices but the Vet said you could not use a non-stick pan around them because of the fumes. Sorry about your loss.
